Love their Hummus! And Beer Selection

I am a big fan of a laid back atmosphere and Olde Magoun's fits that bill. Any time I go here I enjoy my meal. I cannot go to Olde Magoun's without ordering their hummus. I just love it--I think they use Sesame oil, I have tried to replicate it at home many times but mine is never as good. They also give you all sorts of veggies to build you own bites. (I am one of those "perfect bite" kind of people and the hummus plate lets you get just that!)

I also really like their pizza--I get cheese with portobello mushrooms. It is simple but again hits the spot every time.

They have an ever changing selection of beers that is sure to please anyone and I feel like the staff is always helpful. It is just a solid go-to restaurant/pub that I recommend checking out.

  1. Speaking of Olde Magoun - One time I was there and had a pork sandwich that was like carnitas, and came topped with a homemade slaw and a horseradish sauce - amazing.
Went back a second time and thought I ordered the same thing, but received bbq pulled pork that tasted like out of a can, with seemingly can-prepared coleslaw, no horseradish.
First time, it was on a weeknight - second time was during a Sunday football game -

Anyone know whether I ordered the wrong thing or what gives?

I love this place during the day.

Probably unrelated to your experiences, but they do have a new (maybe within the last month or two) chef...and quality has supposedly picked up.

They also do Wednesday specials during each month. This month it's Caribbean...so it's possible that maybe you went on a Wednesday during some kind of southern/bbq special thing?

i absolutely love the pulled pork sandwich i crave it a couple of times a week. The horseradish sauce is served on the side as a dipping sauce for the onion rings. maybe you ordered the pork carnitas soft shell tacos which are also very tasty.

      2. Hummus and beer.....oof, that can be a deadly combination. I used to have hummus and beer while playing chess with a friend at Cambridge Brewing Co. Good hummus and good beer there as well, though my stomach is violently shaking its head "no" right now.

        1. One of my fave bars around. Always consistently good quality bar food. Awesome burgers, too! they have one with serrano and jalapeno peppers and jack cheese, it is the perfect amount of heat! they are also a great place to have a low key gathering/party. I have been to quite a few, and the spread they display (on slabs of stones), usually inclusive of their great pizzas, and classic pub fare (skins, wings, etc) is always excellent. Also, a great comfortable place to watch a game, as they have a variety of tv's and a couple of projection screens for bigger rugby matches/sporting events...can you tell I am a fan of this place?

          1. Has anyone gotten a taste of the specials on Wednesdays? I gather the chef throws down with soul food and also Caribbean (where he's from) but I'm having a hard time picturing that going down well with the local crowd. Or am I just not giving the patrons enough credit?

Though Magoun's is one of our favorites, we have NEVER made it in for one of their Wed specials. What they do is each month is feature a different cuisine/country. They've been doing this for several months running now, so I suspect it is popular enough.

You'd be surprised by the Magoun's crowd - a mix of friendly townies, Irish craftsmen post-shift, Somerville hipsters, and (egads!) a Chowhound or two (we had a hilarious run-in at the bar with one).

I had the jerk chicken last Wednesday and the chicken was tasty but it was certainly not jerk anything. It was a half chicken with a couple sides for $10 and totally worth it.
A friend got the pork dish and it looked great.
Oh, the beef patty was great. $7 for one but it was pretty big (think about the size of 2 of the frozen variety)...and it came with a mango/habanero sauce which was nice and hot.

              2. Bumping this to say thanks to all hounds who have recommended Magoun's. Finally made it there last night. DC did enjoy the hummus, I had a very respectable fried chicken and collards, so-so blackeyed peas and rice (soul food Wednesdays this month), another DC loved her fish and chips--lightly battered fish, didn't taste the chips. Very good beers. I can't believe it took me so long, I'm right in the neighborhood too. Bustling room with a good vibe.

Finally made it here for their Oktoberfest Wednesday menu after missing it last year. It's cracking! Everything was excellent, starting with the cheese (or perhaps cheez) stuffed pretzel that I think is one of their standard appetizers. Shared jaegerschnitzel and house sausage plates. Every single item was strong and surprised us with extra flavour where you might expect a bar would skip on the effort, e.g. the red cabbage with the jaegerschniztel, the mushroom sauce, the authentic touch of curry-powder ketchup for the tasty sausages. You could tell they care about doing this menu well.

Strong beer selection including about five major German Oktoberfest brews on tap.

While I've eaten in old school places in Germany, I would say I have limited experience of German food, but this was very enjoyable and certainly knocks Jacob Wirth's food into a cocked hat.
