Farewell Downtown LA Dinner

A friend of mine is leaving town soon and I'm ISO a decent spot in Downtown area to make his stay more memorable this Friday night. Budget is $$. He likes Italian, Thai, Japanese but I'm thinking to surprise him with some new American like Lazy Oz but it's all booked that night. Any suggestions? Thanks in advanced.

Church and State sounds good but we prefer something on a more casual side and less expensive. I'm still reading some of the reviews on the Drago Centro yelp. Looking good, thanks. Any must order dishes?

The pheasant pappardelle at Drago Centro is really delicious. Also, I love the cheese straws they serve at the bar. However, Drago Centro is not "on the more casual side" - it's pretty upscale. Church and State, on the other hand, IS pretty casual, in my opinion! Other options you might want to consider are Corkbar or Rivera. HTH!

Oh good! It doesn't have as much buzz on this site as some other places do, but my hubby and I are extremely fond of it and go at least once a month. The owner is great and I'm absolutely addicted to their mac n' cheese and their white bean puree. Mmm-mmm - enjoy!

I had a seafood pasta at Drago Centro that was out of this world. Simply perfect and fresh. I dont know what they did, but it was a memorable dish from start to finish. The flavors and textures were just.....well....perfect. Also, the service was first rate. They made us feel really special. A great room. But I would not say it is a casual place. Lots of suits in the room; it's not a blue jeans kind of place.

You can comfortably wear nice jeans with a jacket/sport coat.

"You can comfortably wear nice jeans with a jacket/sport coat."

That applies literally to just about every restaurant in Los Angeles, with the exception of maybe a place like Soot Bull Jeep. Wouldn't want to ruin a nice pair of jeans by perfuming it with charcoal and smoked beef ribs.

Just sayin you can wear jeans to Drago and not feel out of place. I have done so.

I thought this post was going to be about the OP giving up on finding any good dinner in downtown LA.

I just figured you were channeling Raymond Chandler...and Colori Kitchen is a good, inexpensive (but very "plain" ambiance) idea...(as rickym already suggested below and to which I am contributing a "seconding" opinion)
