Artesia Dumpling House Has Something For Everybody

Sadly, Asian Masala, the Halal Indo-Pak Style Chinese Food restaurant in Artesia that served chicken XLB is no more, having been gone for quite a few months now. In its place is Dumpling House. In looking at the menu, most of the items are pedestrian meat, shrimp and vegetable dishes, and indeed you might guess that this was a Cantonese place except for the fact that the staff converses in Mandarin. I suspect this major portion of the menu is intended to be reassuring to the tourist traffic, as the cheese wontons certainly are representative of that ilk. However, there is a variety of more interesting dishes. There are several types of dumplings, and the pan fried dumplings must have been cooked as a unit as there was one crusty bottom connecting several individual dumplings. Also several varieties of steamed buns, which I confirmed were not XLB. Then there is the Indian style section of the menu which includes Manchurian Paneer and numerous chili and 'Manchurian" dishes. (Well this is Little India.) Lastly, and seemingly in the "Indian Style" portion of the menu are several types of Hakka Chow Mein. I don't remember the last time I saw the word "Hakka" on a restaurant menu in the Los Angeles area. Dumpling House is at 18349 Pioneer Blvd. in the DiHo Market shopping center.

This is how the (famed) Dumpling Master in Monterey Park does their pan-fried dumplings as well. Don't really understand the appeal.

Me likey the pan-fried dumpling "socarrat"... Grandma used to just batch all of 'em up in the pan (and she can do no wrong), so I'm biased.

Yes, I do also enjoy Dumpling Master, after stopping by Shun Fat for some groceries every now and then...
