DS is graduating from Pepperdine Law in Malibu in May. We will be about 15 people of all ages for late lunch (about 2 p.m.)

DS lives in Santa Monica and most of us will be heading back in that direction or towards LAX.

Can y'all give us some good recommendations?\

Thank you.

  1. closer to LAX than santa monica:

    Cafe del Rey.

    if you want fine dining
    Marina del Rey,
open continuously between lunch and dinner
    solid food
    excellent wine list
    beautiful room
great view of the boats in the marina.
easy parking--valet, their own attended lot.

you didn' t specify on what day of the week this lunch will take place.
if you do end up at cafe del rey, be aware that on sundays they serve an prix fix three course brunch until 2:30. after that, they revert to their regular menu.

saturday's though, they serve the regular menu.

        second Cafe Del Rey.

        or Gjelina.

the food there is far better than superb.

the logistics, though, imho, leave a lot to be desired for a group like this.

          parking is a problem.
the tables are small and jammed together
          the seating, imho, is uncomfortable
the noise level can be unnerving.

also, i don't know how gracious gjelina would be if some members of the party came late (got lost on the way, or were struggling with the parking situation). would they seat the group anyway?
one of the times i went to gjelina, a member of our group couldn't see signage for the restaurant and ended up driving in circles for 1/4 hr trying to 'find' the place.

      2. Any price point?? Any food preferences??

Anisette is open all day and is quite lively, although you may have most of the place to yourselves at 2 pm.

I agree with the westsidegal. Cafe del Rey is very good and very consistent. It's right off Lincoln Blvd in the Marina. Easy to get back on Lincoln, go south and your at the airport in about 10-15 minutes max.

        2. Casual lunch at Malibu Kitchen just down the hill

          1. I asked for advice so I thought I would come back with the decision. Napa Valley Grille in Westwood. Shows what I know, huh???

Nothing wrong with Napa Valley Grille. It's not a destination to most, but the food is serviceable and I think it will fit one of your criteria well - I think just about everyone from all ages will find the food appealing. In general, folks not from LA can be a little reserved about having anything out of their comfort zone, particularly kids, so the food is relatively conventional without seeming too too ordinary - albeit a little pricy for what you get - one is obviously paying for their overhead. You also want a place that can not only accommodate a party of your size, but the space itself must be clean, airy and comfortable. I think the only possible hitches are for out-of-towners navigating into Westwood village and also finding parking...

I agree. And, Napa Valley Grille has valet parking, a good wine list, and comfortable chairs -- all of which will be nice after a graduation ceremony. Enjoy! And, please report back on your experience, if you have time.

We go for lunch often since my DH works in the area. Never had a bad meal, and they have delicious wines. I don't think you will be disappointed.

              3. Thanks everyone. One of his classmates worked there for a while, so he has an "in". He is having his luncheon at the same time at the same place. I have perused the menu, it seems to fit our crowd.
