Tips for Dining, Eating, and Food Shopping in Manhattan

Looking for lunch near MoMA

Heading to MoMA on Monday - never been there - where is a good place to get lunch nearby?

  1. They have a decent cafeteria on the 2nd floor that is run by one of the most popular restaurateurs in town (Danny Meyer of Union Square Hospitality Group). For museum food, it's actually quite good! The formal, fine dining restaurant next door, The Modern, is also run by him. They have a more casual "bar" room that is not exactly cheap but delicious. Good if you want a more upscale option. Reservations recommended (they take them for both the formal and bar rooms).

If you wish to wander outside the museum, I'd go to La Bonne Soup or burger joint in the Parker Meridian hotel. For a standing up meal, the halal chicken and rice cart on 53rd and 6th (SW corner during the day, SE corner at night, look for the bags that say "We are different") hits the spot, too.

    1. I agree with Kathryn that both The Modern's formal dining room and the Bar Room are superb options.

Outside the museum, I highly recommend Seasonal Restaurant & Weinbar, on 58th St., b/t 6th & 7th Avs. We've had two excellent dinners there. At lunch, they offer a 3-course prix fixe for $27, an excellent value for food of such high caliber

      1. I second RGR's recommendation for Seasonal. Exceptionally executed "new" Austrian fare at very reasonable prices. And its great if you are interested in exploring Austrian wines. Service was warm and accommodating. Its wonderful to see Chef Ban's take on Austrian food here in North America. We had the schweinebauch, pochiertes ei, weiner schnitzel, and a cheese plate. All were delicious and perfectly executed. Good vibes all around.
