HELP! small custom birthday cake needed for tomorrow early afternoon

I meant to order from Magnolia earlier but somehow forgot. When I called now they said it is too late. Can someone recommend another bakery? I'm just looking for a small and nice birthday-style cake (layers with buttercream frosting) where I can have a message written on top. Needs to be near work (walking distance from 51st & 6th; 9th Ave is too far) and hassle-free in terms of pick-up, placing the order, etc.

Thanks in advance for any ideas.

  1. Buttercup Bake Shop on 2nd Ave at around 52nd. They have the BEST stuff and totally accomodated my last minute request 2 weeks ago. Staff there is awesome and cakes are delicious! I went to them when Billy's couldn't help me (they were very rude!), and I was so pleased with everything. I would HIGHLY recommend Buttercup. Of course, it's across town for you, but a quick and easy cab ride or even walk.

Plus, a few dollars cheaper than Magnolia and Billys - maybe that makes up for cab fare???

Thanks, jenhen2. I actually just called Magnolia (it's close). They said they typically have extra cakes on hand, especially the earlier part of the day. I'm going to call them tomorrow, select a cake over the phone and they'll add the message before I stop by to pick it up later. I'm looking for efficiency here and that does the trick for me!

Oh good. Some other time you'll have to try Buttercup. It's great!

Interesting that Billy's was rude to you. I've had a similar experience with them. I tried to order a red velvet cake with cream cheese icing. First time I called, they said they couldn't take my order so far in advance (I was calling 2 weeks in advance needing a cake for the 4th of July). When I called back the day I was told to, they said it was too late - they were already booked up!

Luckily, I went by the day I needed the cake, and they had an extra red velvet made with butter cream frosting. I bought the cake, but mentioned nicely that red velvet cakes really should be made with cream cheese frosting. You know what she said to me? "Well then maybe you should have made the cake!". Seriously. And she wasn't smiling.

        I've never been back since.

OMG! I can't believe they did that to you, but I also can't say I'm surprised. My experience was that I called to order a German Chocolate cake for that day. It took more than 4 mins on hold before they confirmed they had it. So I said I would buy it with my credit card and pick it up that afternoon. They said it would be an additional $5 (on a $48 cake so >10%) to hold it until the afternoon because they could be selling it. I said I was purchasing it that moment on my credit card, so they would no doubt get full "value" for their cake, but the guy insisted on the extra charge. I told him "thank you, but I will meet my cake need some other way." He said "Good luck with that." and hung up. I will never be back to Billys!!
