Where to get a champagne cake?

slbear Apr 13, 2010 07:04 AM

I'm looking to get a champagne cake with Bavarian cream or custard filling.

This is for my friend's birthday. She had mentioned before that her favorite cake is the champagne cake from El Segundo Bakery, which is now closed. I have never been there myself, so I am not exactly sure what this cake is like there.

But any suggestions would be great.

I know this is far and out of the way, but Sweet Art Cakes in Upland and La Verne have a champagne cake flavor (or it could be pink champagne flavor). I recently ordered my husband's 30th birthday cake from here, and when I came in for the design session, they offered a tasting of cake. I believe it was a pink champagne, and I thought it was delightful...I would have picked it had the cake been for me and not my husband. They are most well-known for their fancy designed cakes, but I'm sure they could do a simple one for you. I was extremely pleased with my husband's cake....well designed to my specifications, it was an awesome showpiece that tasted wonderful, too!

Is this the cake that has green seedless grapes in it or on it?

I'm not sure. I've never had that cake from el segundo bakery before. Actually, I've only heard about that bakery recently, but they were closed already.

If anyone has had it there, maybe you could describe it to me.

Plusko's Bakery in Canoga Park has been making champagne cakes for over 30 years. It's not my favorite but apparently it is a big seller for them.

Champagne is one of the offerings from Kiss My Bundt (available if pre-ordered). Qualifiers:
            1) Chrysta Wilson only makes bundt cakes (mini, baby, and big ol' bundt), so there's no filling (only frosting or glaze).
            2) I haven't had the champagne flavor. I can vouch for strawberry, chocolate-mint, and banana. Very moist cakes.

I ended up ordering from Jamaica's cakes a champagne cake with bavarian cream filling and fresh strawberries. Cake was moist and everything tasted very fresh. My friend even said that it's as good as she remembered from el segundo bakery. Thanks for all your suggestions.
