Looking for a Buttery Herby Chowder in Newport

When I was a Kid My mother would often drag me down to Newport RI for the Day for some Sightseeing and Antiquing. Among the Highlights was having chowder at what I thought was the Black Pearl restaurant but I think i'm mistaken. The chowder was thinner and lighter in texture than the ones I was used to, it seemed to have more of a buttery flavor than cream flavor, there were fresh herbs on top and I think I remember a shot of something in it, because there were little pools of golden liquid floating on top.

The reason I think it was not the Black Pear is I bought a can of their chowder from a Place in Providence and it was nothing like what I remember.

My Wife and I will be in Newport on Friday and was wondering if anyone knew what I was talking about and knew where we could get it.

It also sounds kind of like the chowder at Anthony's in Middletown - I think that they used be downtown in Newport w/ a sort of cafeteria type seafood place- thin NE chowder w/ thyme and other herbs and it's got sherry or something in it - They also have the best fried seafood in the area.

Cooke House and Mooring also have good chowder but not sure if they fit your description....

I remember distinctly having this chowder at Cooke's unfortunately they were not serving lunch on Friday. we did have both the RI and New England Clam Chowder @ Anthony's, While it was closer to what I was looking for it was by no means the real thing.

On a side note; my wife insisted we go to Flo's for Fried Clams and Fish and Chips based on seeing it on "The Best thing I've ever ate - Crispy Edition' it wasn't my Favorite. we might try Anthony's Next time.

I think I've figured it out. it was the Clarke Cooke House not the Black Pearl. Does anyone know if the Chowder is still the same fro the late 70's and Early 80's?
