Ethopian Food in Calgary

I had lunch at Ibex on Friday and found it to be interesting, although my daughter did not like what she ordered we were both satisfied as there was enough on my platter for two, can anyone recommend other Ethiopian restaurants in Calgary..

  1. i believe Luxor is still downtown.

EDIT: oops, somehow i misread this as "egyptian." hahha!

there is also marathon and blue nile, both in kensington.

    1. Across the street from Ibex - Fassil Ethiopian.
By far the best Ethiopian I have ever had. Very fresh ingredients and friendly (although slow) service.

A very huge second thumbs up for Fassil.

Yes. Fassil does takeout. We order it often... just call ahead or be prepared to wait for your order.

I didn't like Fassil. The gored gored was overbuttered and underseasoned. It also caused me some intestinal distress, which is rare for me despite my love of eating meat raw.

The misser wot (spicy red lentils) on the other hand was above average - it was a bit chewier in texture than most and had a really nice flavour from their spice mix. The other lentil dish (kik alitcha) and vegetables were quite ordinary. The injera was thick but a bit crumbly - average to average minus I suppose. Overall I cannot recommend this experience.

The wait at Marathon is seemingly interminable, even by the standards of most Ethiopian restaurants, but the food is good. I don't really like their kitfo either though (not raw!), but all the other dishes I've tried there are nice. The injera is usually tangy and spongy, so this place is decent. I think the prices are slightly high and the servings slightly small, but I certainly never leave hungry. I'd say Marathon is decent but not exceptional.

My favourite in Calgary is Blue Nile. It's still not as good as what I get in Edmonton, but the couple of times I've been there make it my preference for Ethiopian in Calgary. It's been a while so I can't remember it in as great detail as the others, but I remember enjoying the spicy heat of the lamb dish that enhanced the other flavours. The cabbage (atkilt alitcha) was one of the best I've had at any Ethiopian restaurant.

Hope this advice helps in your quest.
