Mid Town with my less adventurous spouse

I'll be in the city Friday for one day (early) and for the evening, basically just to walk around and have fun. We usually go just to prowl around and eat and this time I've vowed not to make my SO walk more than a few miles (we'll take subways like we usually do).
The only place on my foodmap this time around is The Cart in midtown where I've been dying to try the chicken and rice (for lunch). I'm here to ask, where can I bring my SO for an early dinner. She is not a fan of any real ethnic food aside from Italian (so definitely suggest some places like that). Basically Italian or American would work. We've had our share of "the best" burgers in the city (that's her thing) but I would avoid any suggestions for places known mostly for burgers.

We're not huge drinkers either, so perhaps $50 pp for dinner?
We're staying at Le Parker Meridien, by the way.
any thoughts?

p.s You don't need to debate the corner that the Cart is on or tell me that it's only open from 8pm on. I know that there's more than one and to look for the Yellow Bags.

  1. any particular area you want to be in?

    1. Check out the menu at Rue 57 just down the next corner from your hotel on 6th Ave. It lists itself as French/New American/&Sushi. Read the whole menu to find the sections that would interest you:
I know it's quirky, but always jumping. I don't like it for breakfast or brunch though.
Just over on 7th Ave and 56th St. you'll find the Redeye Grill:
A quick ride uptown to 73rd is another neighborhood place - Arte Cafe:
If you want a different area - let us know.

If you want to walk crosstown (or grab the bus on 57th), check out Luna Piena for Italian:

Rue 57 was perfect by the way...thanks!
Also I'm glad we finally got to hit "the cart" on 53rd and 6th. My "less adventurous spouse" LOVED IT and I thought she wouldn't want to try it.

        2. There really is no need to travel to the UWS for excellent, moderately-priced Italian food. Trattoria Trecolori, a favorite of mine and many other Hounds, is a short walk from your hotel, on 47th St., b/t B'way & 8th Av. Delicious homestyle fare, friendly and efficient service, nicely-spaced tables, and attractive decor. They accept reservations.

          1. I second RGR's recommendation of Trattoria Trecolori. We always enjoy the fritto misto and the spaghetti bolognese.

For seasonal american that is, arguably, within walking distance (corner of 48th and 11th), you can try the new restaurant that just opened in Ink 48 called "Print." If you are trying to google it, you will need to google "Print restaurant" to find it easily. The prices are reasonable for high quality farm to table seasonal american. IMO, Print is definitely a few steps up (in terms of quality) from Rue 57 and Redeye Grill, but the prices are pretty comparable.

            Best of luck!
