Mauritius - Port Louis
PORT LOUIS, MAURITIUS
Located on a small cobbled street near the Photography Museum and off a winding street a few blocks up the hill from Company Gardens is the wonderful outdoor CAFE DU VIEUX CONSEIL, on the Rue du Vieux Consiel, right across from what appeared to be a court building with lots of lawyers coming and going. A delightful French inspired restaurant showcasing local tastes. We went back for lunch two days in a row on a recent cruise stop so this is a highly recommended excursion if you visit this island.
Palm hearts and smoked local marlin salad was my first day's entree and DH had the calamari curry. Couldn't tell who made the best choice as both were wonderful, lovely breads, interesting hot "green" spread and home made ice cream and sorbets for dessert redolent with fresh tropic flavors direct from this part of the world:, banana, cinnamon, ginger, mango, vanilla - all fabulous. DH chose banana flambee and crepe ala orange for his two days of dessert. I stuck with the wonderful ice cream
Second day it was chicken and prawn curry for me and a vindaloo for DH. Again perfect in deft, richtseasoning with wonderful plated sides, bottled sparkling water, and two incredible expressos so welcome half way around the world from France, the kind you almost chew and scrape the foam lovingly out of the tiny cup to get the last of it.
Outdoor tables under spreading trees and some covered patio tables, if the weather turn rainy. Gravel courtyard and lovely old colonail buildings surround this garden spot. A must stop when you are in this part of the world, in surprising Port Luis.
Total bill for two days of wonderful dining was US$80 when we got the credit card charge.
This is the place so reservations are in order at night, but we were able to drop in without reservations for lunch. email: vieux.conseil@intnet.mu Phone: 211 0393 FAX 211 7286
