Stamna - Greek Taverna in Bloomfield/Montclair border

Curlz Apr 11, 2010 05:12 AM

Had dinner at Stamna again this week, and was curious to see if there was a thread about the place here on CH. I was surprised there wasn't, so I'm happy to start it. I'm not Greek, but based on conversations and posts I've read elsewhere from people who are, this place is serving authentic Greek food, and many of the dishes can be tough to find outside of the Mediterranean.

I love this place. I love the food and the boisterous vibe, even if the service isn't always fully up to par (but they're responsive when you need them). That's how much I enjoy it.
Our favorite thing to do is (over-) order mezes--we often never even get around to ordering a full entree. Share and you get to try more! Everything from the 'dips' of skordalia, taramosalata, and hummus to the lemon potatoes, the horta (sauteed greens), grilled octopus tentacles, and the (imo) don't-miss loukanikos (Greek sausage) is wonderful. There is a dish called makarounes that's 'just' a bowl of whole wheat pasta w/a ton of well-done sauteed onions and grated Greek cheese over it that blows everyone away each time. Lemon and good olive oil abound, as do whole fresh fish. The raves always come back to how simple and delicious the food is.

The flavors are there, the prices are very reasonable, and the food is always fresh. It's BYO, and if you're planning to go, make a reservation--the place is MOBBED on the weekends.

Note: If you're not comfortable in a noisy restaurant, this place may not be for you--or at least, not on a weekend night.

I went back Saturday night. It was ridiculously packed - we had an 8:30 res and finally sat down close to 9:00. Usual craziness - I went traditional and had the Mousaka which was great. Worst part was we sat at the very rear by the door. the stairwell there serves as the smoking lounge for the waiters etc., so everytime the door opened, which was often, the smoke wafted in. Felt like I was sitting in the smoking section circa 1982.

Otherwise, 4 of us shared a bunch of mezzes, a humongous greek salad. The 2 men both had mousaka and the women both had swordfish so not much variety on the mains.

I have dined at Stamna quite a few times and almost always been very happy. I went once and they must have been having an off night because the food was just ok. It seemed like everything was dry and left over from another night. I went back after that though and things were back to normal. Maybe the cook was on vacation that one time.

Totally agree. Food is very good..but as Curlz points out, it can be mobbed and tables are pretty tightly packed in. All the mixed grill platters are enough food for 3 days.

I work in Clifton and I have been there a few times for lunch. Very good food and those lemon potatoes are excellent
