Anyone remember a Widen or Weidens Bakery?

We used to get cakes there when I was a kid, south side 1960s. I assume it is gone but maybe it turned up at another location??? The fruit basket cake was great. Different fruit layers with yellow cake.

  1. Hey Bigmac 100,

I see your question is a couple of years old, but Weidens Bakery was located on the south side of 79th Street between Laflin and Bishop. I grew up around the corner and used to go there all the time.

    1. You can have great fun with "does anyone remember" queries on the Forgotten Chicago website (go to Forums).

Also, try the Weber's Bakery website and go to Signature Items. They have a Banana Split cake with layers of fresh fruit. If you make a trip to Weber's, while you're at it, check out the coffee cake with a cheese filling and topped with about a quart of fresh strawberries.

      1. My grandmother worked at Widens Bakery many years until the early 60s when she retired. We went there many Saturday mornings for baked goods. Limps bread, cardamom coffee cake and rolls, alligator coffee cake(my favorite), and scorpa. Many fond memories of the ladies that worked there who used to give me " samples" of cookies.

        1. Yes, Widens was just west of Bishop on the south side of 79th St in Chicago, Illinois. I remember it as a child. It's been gone for almost 50 years.

Yea, it's been a long time since Weidens was there. SabinaBoy and others, I have thread at Forgotten Chicago dedicated to the St. Sabina neighborhood. If you'd like to contribute and keep what you remember alive go to http://forgottenchicago.com/forum/1/1.... Let's not let those good memories fade.
