Hot House Cafe-Noho, and other non-restaurants

I live near the Hot House Cafe in Valley Village where the shooting happened last week. I had been by that place countless times and always knew it wasn't a real business. There was a side room with tinted windows. The main storefront area was always empty, and the "private" room usually had guys hanging out, lotsa Beamers, Mercedes, and more expensive rides parked out front.

Almost got ran over by a bunch of thugs in a BMW coming out of that place one night and they were yelling a bunch of profanities at me for telling them to be careful.

I think this wasn't a money laundering operation, but a restaurant that was subsidized as a priavate club.

Are there any other curious operations in your 'hood, money laundering, fronts, "private" restaurants? Have you dined there? Always thought about going into Hot House, but always assumed in would be mediocre food.

  1. FYI it's the Hot Spot, not the Hot House.

a few years back, a buddy and i walked into a russian joint tucked into the corner of a strip mall on the north side of riverside, somewhere east of laurel canyon, i think.
we were asked(heavily accented) to leave, not too politely, with no explanation. the restaurant was not even close to full.
very ominous vibe. we scooted like bunnies.

Think that was the Russian Village, I had gone there once. I't something different now, if it's the same place you're talking about.

i think that might have been the name of it, thanks. being a coward, i never returned.

    2. Also in Valley Village, Classique Raphy's on Magnolia does Kosher Chinese food for private parties only. I believe it was once open to the public.
