New Japanese Restaurant in Ocean Twp - Ginza

Had lunch today at the Japanese restaurant that replaced FUNE in Cobblestone Village, Ocean, NJ. It's called Ginza. If there were no other Asian restaurant within 10 - 20 miles it would be passable, but with several excellent Japanese spots within a couple miles, it's not worth the trip, even if you're just across the street. Nothing horrible, just barely acceptable, below average. Don't bother going there.

Just curious, what are the 'excellent Japanese spots within a couple miles'?

Ichiban, Takara, Sawa ,Taka and Kanji. Of those, my favorites are Kanji and Takara.

Add to that Asia Star. BTW, bgut, how is Ichiban since the remodeling? I haven't been there in a couple years.

if Asia Star were the only food source within 500 miles, I would eat rocks or go hungry...

aklein, I wouldn't go that far, but I was very disappointed with their Chinese fare. However, I did enjoy the sushi lunch I had there. Not as good as some of the others mentioned, but good enough for a repeat visit sometime.

maybe I just had 6 or 7 bad experiences there.... but I appreciate that I just might be missing something... still, with the places I do enjoy, including Kanji, Taka, Fuji, Osaka in Bradley Beach, sometimes Sawa, I don't really have much need to go to Asia Star anyway.... but maybe I was a little harsh... then again....

Aklein, we went there the first time because of a couple positive reviews on this board, so others like it. But as we all know, there are often violent differences in experience. (See, e.g., some postings about Nicholas.) I like trying new places. But overall I agree with your list, with Kanji at the top of it, and our most frequent sushi location.

b - where would, say, Nobi in TR or Kazu in Howell stack up against the places you mention?

cant - Admittedly, I haven't returned to Ichiban since they completed the remodeling work. For the longest time, they used to be my old standby in the area. Instead, over the past year I've moved my local business over to Takara. In fact I enjoyed some nice sushi takeout from them last night. I'm sure however that Ichiban is still good.
MGZ - While I've never had the chance to try Kazu, Nobi is definitely up there with the best of sushi restaurants in Monmouth and Ocean Counties.

In that case, I suppose I shall continue to go to the OC when I get the raw fish urge. Thanks.

Ichiban is my standby for sushi in our area, and they're just as good after the remodel. You should give it a try some time!

I've been wanting to try Takara for a while now...but it's just hard getting myself to go to that strip mall...but I'm definitely going to try it!

Thanks B. My wife called me earlier and advised that her brother and S-I-L wanted to take us out for Japanese for her birthday. I was hoping that he was envisioning going to Kanji, which if I recall, you highly recommended.

She called later to confirm that's where we're headed out to next week.

I would go with Kanji also, had many a lunch there and it was all good.

Good choice JustJake. IMHO, it's the best sushi restaurant in the county. I hope you have a great time. BTW, a couple of my favorites include the live scallop and broiled scallop appetizers along with the tuna tartare 3 flavor, the kanji abalone and the sushi pizza.

My friends went there recently and reported the same. However, if anyone out there is looking for cheap sushi, Ginza's been spamming a lot of coupons.
