Anyone have good recomendations for a good seafood restaurant in the southbay/venice area? Preferably not your "filled with kids and families" type of place. Good atmosphere / good food / low key? If not, best seafood recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

the really good seafood houses of yesteryear are gone. There's Ocean Ave Seafood in Santa Monica. Fair. McCormicks and Schmicks in El Segundo. Fair. There's Santa Monica Seafood on Wilshire. Fair, but maybe getting better. I hate to say this, but it is hard to get a decent piece of fish in this town. Unless you want to go high end like Melisse or Providence etc. I will be interested to hear what others have to say. Maybe there is some great seafood dive that's being kept a secret. There's a lot of talk about Mariscos Chente on Centinela which I have yet to try but gets good reviews on this board but zero comfort and atmosphere. they were closed the one time I tried to have lunch there. good luck.

I would like to chime in with a heartfelt recommendation for Chef Melba’s Bistro in Hermosa Beach. It may well be exactly what you are looking for. Small, low key, quiet and guilty of serving up deliciously prepared fresh seafood among a few solid turf offerings as well. The Sea Scallops with Shrimp Hash and Thai Curry Sauce, the Almond Basa (Vietnamese/Thai Catfish) with Lemon Caper Sauce and the Cioppino are excellent choices. Low-carb and gluten-free selections are available too. Very nice international wine list. Superb, attentive service and cordial atmosphere complete the makings of a highly pleasurable dining experience. The only thing missing is an ocean view. C’est la vie.

Admiral Risty in Rancho Palos Verdes is old school seafood restaurant. Nice coastal view.

Kincaid's in Redondo is decent. I think the food is pretty good but have had iffy service a few times...right on the water & very nice atmosphere.

Ocean Ave Seafood has great oysters and nice atmosphere and I also like BP Oysterette but it has a much more casual feel.

One more place that, while it doesn't get a lot of love here, has some nice features (including a great view of the sun setting behind the Pacific - and some good food as well): The Lobster at the foot of the Santa Monica Pier (an excellent drinks menu too).

Another place to consider would be Dukes in Malibu. A bit farther to the north, but not a terrible drive. Nice food and ambiance.

Haven't tried, but Blue Water Grill in Redondo sounds what you are looking for.
