Lunch spot for 5 ladies in OC

I'm looking for a recommend for a restaurant, preferably in the Costa Mesa, Newport Beach area that has good sandwiches and salads and a nice atmosphere and one that isn't a chain. Is there a restaurant in Fashion Island or South Coast Plaza that might be nice for a Wednesday luncheon?

  1. In FI there's R&D Cafe (small chain) and in SCP there's Marche Moderne.

    1. You might like the Mariposa at Neiman Marcus. They moved it and it now has a nice view, very "ladies who lunch" kind of place. Lovely salads, etc. and still serve those wonderful popovers.

Be aware! If you choose Mariposa be sure to clarify your order since they slip a $5.00 shared plate charge! My friend and I ordered the truffle fries and a sandwich which we planned to share. NO mention of plate charge but it was put on our bill!!

        2. I was recently at Charlie Palmer's (CP) @ Bloomingdales and was impressed with their space (lovely!). CP gets mixed reviews here, but I thought their food was nicely and tastefully done. I'm certainly looking forward to going back.

I was just going to recommend CP or Marche Moderne. CP space is much bigger and the service is much better than MM.

Glad you tried it! The room is lovely.

              R&D is good, but loud.

Marche Moderne is nice, but the patio was hot on a cool day (little ventilation), so make sure you get a table inside.

            2. If it's nice outside, the patio at The Cannery in Newport Beach is nice. If you're into something more urban, intimate, and quaint, there's Old Vine at The Camp in Costa Mesa.

              1. The Ritz and Brasserie Pascal are also very good options in/near Fashion Island.

                1. The Golden Truffle, a somewhat quaint bistro in South Costa Mesa, serves exceptional lunches Tuesday thru Friday from 11:30 to 2:00 PM. Alan Greeley, owner/chef is usually there during these hours. His presence will indeed maximize your dining pleasure. I suggest giving a call to confirm his presence and to reserve. You might even consider dining in Alan's wine cellar for a truly enhanced, private experience. Talk it over with them when you call in.

Your best bet is to just let Alan cook whatever he wishes. Let him know how many courses you would like and if you have any food aversions or limitations. I suggest at least four courses, preferably more, to give him a solid opportunity to fairly display his extensive gastronomique. His frequent catering engagements afford many off-menu surprises that you would not know were available if you relied solely upon the regular menu that changes daily. Exceptional wine list and pairings. Outstanding service.

                  1. Thanks, everybody, for all the wonderful suggestions! I knew I could count on you. I've submitted all of your recommendations and I have a feeling that over the next few months we'll be trying all of them since we go at least once a month and are sick and tired of chains.
