  1. I love the veggie burger at Southwest NY in the financial district - made with black beans, and served between corn cakes (like arepas). Best with sauteed mushrooms and a side of soft corn pudding or maduros. Yum.

    1. I really like the vegetable burger at 5 Napkin Burger. It's made from portabello mushrooms and beets (and maybe other stuff). I know that sounds weird -- at least I thought it sounded weird first time I asked -- but it's really tasty. Be forewarned: it's huge and it's messy. But all in a good way! (It comes with fries, but I believe they'll sub salad or other stuff if you ask.)

      1. My vegetarian friends love the ones at Quantum Leap. Ridiculous name, but they make them in house supposedly.

I'll second this rec, they have a great spicy veggie burger that I think is great. And i'm not a vegetarian.

        2. I like the veggie burger at Stand quite a bit. I think it's even better than their normal burger, which is about slightly above average. And their sweet potato fries are the only ones that I've found at a restaurant are crispy.

          1. The veggie burger at Film Center Cafe on 9th Ave. is one of my favorites. It's delicious, and comes with avocado, sprouts, and sweet potato fries.

falafels are an alternative but fried.
i am also doing the same thing, lost 15 pounds this year, good luck.

OMG I totally adore the 'Shroom Burger at Shake Shack. But you're right -- since it's stuffed with cheese and deep fried, it's not exactly health food.

I LOVE the 'Shroom Burger! I always add an order of cheese fries.

              2. i've always been partial to Dojo's soy burger- i like it w/ cheese

Agree. Houston's, now called Hillstone, does serve possibly the best veggie burger I've tasted. It's better than many of their meaty offerings.

                    1. re: marciamarcia...

Totally Agree. Best veggie burger I've ever had was at Houstons. When did they change their name to Hillstone?

                    2. thank you!!!! Going to check all of them out and will report back!

                      1. Adding Zaitzeff to the list - served with melted cheese & avocado. Very tasty.

                        1. I agree with MarciaMarcia, Houston's (Hillstones in Manhattan) has the BEST veggie burger...

                          1. " veggie burger seasoned with Worcestershire"
Worcestershire is not vegetarian it- is made with anchovies. This might be a veggie burge but it is not suitable for vegetarians. Be aware.

                            1. re: Daniel Littman

They do also make Worcestershire sauce without anchovies that is suitable for vegetarians. You can buy it at Whole Foods and other places.

                              1. re: oceans

Yeah, but is the one they're serving vegetarian? It's been my experience that the current run of veggies options taste lousy.
Sharwood's used to make a fabulous Worcestershire sauce that didn't have anchovies but they dropped it and started manufacturing Asian condiments instead. I wish I'd known--I'd have stocked up at Zabar's. :(

                            2. I would like to add Blue Smoke's Hickory Smoked Veg Burger. It's full of flavor and modestly sized. It's served with a tomato chutney that I discarded and used bbq sauce instead. Delish.

                              1. Try COUNTER Vegetable Bistro -- 105 First Ave. Very good...Mushroom pâté, housemade seitan, fresh herbs...delish

I was going to suggest Counter myself! Best one I've had.

                                  1. re: Frederick Loren

YES - Counter's is REALLY good, it's seitan-based, flavorful and delicious on a lovely brioche bun. There are so many mediocre veg burgs out there in the world. I also really recommend The Lodge in Williamsburg - especially with sauteed onions & cheddar on top.
