Birthday Freebies

threedogs Apr 7, 2010 07:30 AM

In the spirit of the celebration of my birthday today (which is very quiet, since my girls treated me on Saturday), I thought a thread about local birthday food freebies was in order.

Yes, I am a major cheap-o. I figure there must be others lurking in our chowhound midst...

[Note: all the places I found required a simple email sign-up, and the printing of a coupon. With a bit of tweaking, I managed to actually print some coupons even though my printer is almost out of ink. And please, please, PLEASE remember to tip according to what the check would be if you had to pay - if the service is good, I try to tip more, since it's the one time I can.]

Yesterday I ate at Elephant & Castle. Got a coupon for a free entree (the best deal I could find, btw). I remembered a hound mentioning that their burgers were the best, so I ordered the cheddar burger. Forgot that I wanted something with bacon. Darn, it was my birthday - I deserve bacon! :-(

No matter - it was delicious, cooked as I like it (medium) with hot, hot, hot fries (sorry, 'chips'). I seldom eat red meat (yeah, I'm a real health nut - I make up for it with ice cream and junk food, lol), and burgers have always been a favorite of mine.

Was comfortable dining there alone, got served fast, which got me to my (routine) dr's appt on time. Very good.

Other freebies I haven't yet taken advantage of yet: cone (one scoop) at any Ben & Jerry's scoop shop, a burger at Fuddruckers, dessert at the Ninety Nine Restaurant (dine-in or take-out). Friendly's also sent me a coupon for a free three scoop sundae w/a purchase of a meal - this was for anyone signing up for their *club* but I don't have any Friendly's near me - plus, I really don't want to get sick (their food really went downhill, IMO). And I also was brave & got a free meal at... gasp...at Old Country Buffet (there's one in Medford) when you purchase another. Knowing what this food is like (my mom used to love Hometown Buffet, and I hated it with a passion). I may go to just have their salad... don't know yet.

Hopefully others will be able to share some local food birthday freebies. Too bad all of these are at chains - 'course I know I'll enjoy the Ben & Jerry's cone.

    Great idea!

Fiorella's in Newtonville gives you a complimentary entree if you join their birthday club!

Just got my husband's card for a free entree from Fiorella's. It's valid Monday through Thursday, and you can go any day in the month of your birthday. It's great! We'll get another card next month for mine...bonus.

Not free, but I got a 20% off coupon to Sel de la Terre and Craigie always sends a coupon for a free dessert. Both are good for your birthday month and you get them if you're on the mailing list.

Oops, I meant 20% off at SDLT, and separately, a free dessert at Craigie (and I forgot about the little free gift -- last year I got a small jar of herbes de Provence).

I get the Craigie emails, but I didn't get anything special for my birthday... when you sign up for their emails, they only seem to ask for your email, name, and zipcode. Where does the birthday come into play? Thanks!

Cragie sent over a free extra pre-dessert for me and gave me a cute be-ribboned jar of vanilla sugar for my birthday.

the Halfway Cafe has a birthday deal - you have to sign up for it on the internet. You get a birthday meal up to $10 when you present the coupon.

Halfway Cafe isn't in my area - but I'm sure others can take advantage of this (I figure if my gas and wear & tear on my jalopy equals or is worth more than the freebie, I'll pass it up).

We are regulars at the Dedham Halfway Cafe (wings... rings...) and get their email newsletter. Each month, they send out the coming month's "Seven for $7" - seven dinner entrees each at $7 bucks (they're only worth ordering 50% of the time) and there is a birthday coupon attached to each newsletter. Bring the coupon within a week of your birthday (with ID) for a free dinner entree. We always appreciate our free meals plus the "frequent diner card", about every other time we eat there, we get a $5 coupon for next time.
