Halibut

I always buy my halibut at Granville Island which is superb, but the price is getting just too hight. Any suggestions other than Granville Island for a good fish monger for halibut in the Vancouver area? I was just on Vancouver Island and the price per pound was less than half what I pay here and the quality was amazing.

Dont laugh. Thrifty's. Excellent quality. Always fresh. And it's on sale this week. I just go to the Thrifty's (port moody) for fish...most of the time.

I have been looking at the sales flyers online on a weekly basis to buy my fish/chicken so that I can try to get it on sale every week from a different retailer. Obviously I don't find it on sale every week but I have been able to find some good deals this way. I usually look at Urban Fare, Whole Foods, Capers, and Choices flyers before I go shopping for fish.....

Just bought a few pounds from costco today for fish tacos and it was very good. We had friends over for dinner and needed a lot and were going to buy it from whole foods and saw it at costco for way less and took a chance and the fish was fresh and tasted just as good at least in the fish tacos it did. I will def biuy it from there again if we need a lot of it.

thanks fisheater. i ordered some hali from bcwildseafood and it was awesome. nice packaging, fresh tasting not a bone in it and way easier to keep in the freezer than looking for deals for "fresh"(ever wonder how old fresh really is). honestly we eat a lot of fish and i could not tell it has been frozen. going to try some of the tuna loins they offer next week.

Check out T&T, Chinatown, and some other Chinese supermarkets like Chong Lee, etc. Not sure what the prices are these days since I don't usually buy Halibut.

I don't buy halibut much either but mebbe give Seven Seas on 4th Ave a call. I often find their prices lower than GIsle and the quality is very consistent.

The prices are high everywhere. I bought some halibut steaks at Seven Seas the other day (a bit cheaper and better taste cooked on the bone).
The season is young so wait a bit, prices may come down.

A few weeks ago I paid $9.99/lb @ T&T (on sale), Whole Foods was selling the same fish for $26.99/lb.

GIM was around $16.99 last weekend.

I'll try to check the other places in Chinatown tomorrow, one on Gore St the other on E. Georgia.
