your favorite desserts that make you fly like scooby doo

daffyduck Apr 6, 2010 01:52 AM

i am a dessert lover and just wanted to start a thread on off the charts desserts. I prefer less well known but feel free to name the banana pudding at magnolia or the chocolate chip walnut cookie at levain bakery since some of our fellow chowhounders may not know.
ill start off with a few of my favorites:
maple mascarpone cheesecake-babbo
nutella mocha milkshake-shopsins, speaking of milkshakes stand burger's apple pie milkshake is delicious in addition to their well known toasted marshmellow.
also im a big fan of the lunchbox milkshake at blt burger (i love pb and j though, ask for it extra, extra thick though because their shakes are a bit thin
maple budino along with their semifreddo-locanda verde (note: i found their banana loaf with gelato dessert to be mediocre)
cannolo gelato-bruno bakery
bread pudding-sullivan street bakery (awesome with ice cream!)
sugar spice donuts-craft (with their vanilla ice cream!)
dessert i really want to try that i haven't got to yet is the Torrone at Alto.

    Olive Oil Gelato at Otto
I usually don't like any of their stuff, but Cinnamon Bun Pie at Momofuku MB is awesome
Any double crusted pie at TLRH, preferably served warm with ice cream!
Chocolate Chip Brioche at Silver Moon Bakery
Not technically dessert, but Blueberry Pancakes at Clinton Street Baking Co.
Not technically dessert, but Pain Perdu at Landmarc

    Cannoli from Villabate
Any pie a la mode at Clinton Street
When it returns, the fruit crumble for two at Gramercy Tavern

Toffee Date Cake at Locanda Verde
Baba with Griotte Cherries and Pistachio Gelato at The Modern Bar Room
    Rhubarb Coppetta at Otto

i like the donuts at craft they go very well with ice cream
i like the maple budino at LV a lot
ive never tried the cannoli at villabate but my favorite is venieros
ive had the pecan pie a la mode at clinton street, there are a bit too many pecans in the pie. i think the ice cream at clinton street isnt that great. ive only tried butter pecan, coffee, and vanilla. the vanilla is decent though.
i've had the yuzu eskimo at spot, if you like tart things its good. my favorite desserts at spot are the ovaltine cake with condensed milk ice cream and the lychee rice pudding.
if you go to spot ask if cindy is working and tell her anthony her running buddy sent you. maybe shell give you a discount.

"ive never tried the cannoli at villabate but my favorite is venieros"

Then you have to get a couple of cannolis next time you're at Villabate. I'll be surprised if you don't consider your favorites at Veniero's to be sick jokes by comparison.

I'm very pleased that you find my photos and commentaries helpful, fm1963!

It just occurred to me that I've also had the Bomboloni, but at Alto, not Convivio (which, along with Marea, all have the same pasty chef). Unfortunately, I did not share your enthusiasm for them.

Hmm, the bomboloni at Convivio were filled with custard and served with a chocolate dipping sauce - quite different from the apple/caramel version at Alto (which I haven't tried). I guess the pastry chef makes variations of the same dessert at the three restaurants.

they always discontinue great shakes! if only they'd salt their beef a little less their burgers would be stellar. i finally strayed to a "normal" shake, the peanut butter cup shake, and it's so good i've had it thrice. stand's milkshakes are therapy (that's one fantastic sliding-scale fee!). the honey-lavender, for those of you who haven't tried it, needs to find its way into alarm clocks everywhere for a soothing wake-up call.

i finally hit BLT a shake, the rocky road. what a waste of money--i literally wanted to turn back to the counter after one sip and demand my money back. my father's Breyers shakes were tastier!

While we're on the topic of bad shakes, Blue Smoke should alter the menu to properly describe the milkshakes they serve as Trainwrecks.

I've had Alto's Toronne; it's rich and delicious. I love desserts, but I try not to order them too often. Two that I can never resist, though, are Txikito's chocolate flan with brandied whipped cream and Balthazar's profiteroles. Also, if you like PB & J, Chocolate Bar in the W. Village has dark chocolate-covered PB & J patties (as well as Elvis-inspired PB, banana, and marshmallow ones).

I had that cured olive cookie from Abraco on Thursday, and it was excellent! I really highly recommend it. The tartufo at Lupa is excellent and consistent. I haven't been to Milk Bar lately and don't know what they are serving anymore, but I like their cookies. At Two Little Red Hens, probably my favorite things are the various bars - lime/coconut, lemon, Linzer, etc. I love the truffles at Kee's. And the creme brulee and pots au creme tasting at Crispo is also excellent. Those are some desserts that come to my mind at the moment. Edit: I also like the strawberry-rhubarb crumble (or whatever they call it) at Cafe Mogador and the double chocolate cupcakes at Chikalicious Dessert Club. 2nd Edit: I can't believe I forgot the Badam Halwa at Saravanaa Bhavan. If you have any appetite left after having your utthapam or masala dosa, do not pass up this splendid dessert!

I think the tastiest thing I've gotten at Ceci Cela is their lemon tart. Excellent, tangy lemon curd therein.

the other night i tried all the dessert agua dulce (not by myself! lol i was with a large group of friends) though none of them were out of this world (my favorite was the flan) their ice cream is really stellarr.

Artic Cicle-Aquavit. you can get it at the bistro section even though it's not on the menu!

One of my favorite desserts in all of Manhattan. So glad the new chef is keeping it on the menu. The portion at the bistro is smaller than the one at dining room though.

                                      Moishe's is on 2nd Avenue between 6th and 7th.
All the fillings are good, so pick your favorite.
They sell a poppy, apricot, prune, and raspberry in two sizes.
Expect the edges will likely be cooked well done, and crumbly.
It's a special place, and their hamantaschen are like meals.

For a chewier more buttery version (which I personally consider more traditional), I like the poppy from Nine Street Bakery on 9th St., between 2nd and 1st Ave. They're cheaper than Moishe's and while similar, might even be better. I'm not sure if they bake in house, or what the scoop is with this place.

they're tasting closer to Moishe's lately, only heavier if that's possible. worth trying though.

Yes, they sell the regular (small and large size) hamantaschen year round. Only the soft hamantaschen (rather like buns with filling) are sold during the Purim season alone.

I am a regular customer at Moishe's and am glad to have a good, haimish kosher bakery around, but I would criticize the hamantaschen as having somewhat saltier dough than I would prefer. That said, I happen to like the mun (poppy seed) hamantaschen the best, with the prune ones in 2nd place. And lest I be misunderstood, I would give a recommendation of them, albeit a slightly qualified one.

Here are some of the items I recommend more than the hamantaschen at Moishe's:

Mandelbrot (which they call mandel bread) - excellent!
Rugelach (not cheap, but great and one of their best items; get an assortment)
The large nut, poppy, and chocolate strudels (they will cut them into smaller pieces if you ask; I especially like the nut strudel)
The small poppy and apple strudels
Black & whites, when fresh (ask if they were made today)
                                        Cinnamon sticks
                                        Cinnamon danishes
Almond horns, with or without chocolate

I would generally avoid the smaller cookies, though the large "Chinese" almond cookies are good. The bagels are just OK, not special at all. The kichlach (very large sugar cookies) are good. I haven't tried their challah, but they do a lot of business in it, so it's probably worth a try.

Challah's are good enough, and their corn rye was one of the better you could find, last I tried it, which was a while ago.

Another cookie that's good there is the chocolate swirl, which is sort of the great grandfather of the black and white cookie, only it's the batter instead of the icing. It's a familiar lost taste for anyone raised on this style of baking. So are many of their pastries, actually.

Last I checked, left hand side, on the shelf between the counter, and front window display.

It's their version of a pinwheel cookie.

I used the plural, kichlach. I merely said they were good, though.

Last time I was at Il Lab - they had olive oil gelatto -- It may have been the best I've had.

I would like to add Levain Bakery's walnut chocolate chip cookie into the mix as well.

I did the 5 course dessert tasting at WD50 last night, it was fantastic.
amuse bouche dessert-White Beer Ice cream, apple, caramel, Caraway (basically white beer ice cream, apple and caramel sauce and a type of chocolate cookie. This is delicious, especially when all mixed up together.
dessert 1: Cheesecake wild blueberries, plantain, cinnamon. The cheesecake was so soft it was encased in the blueberries. the platain was a small sauce component and surprisingly good.
dessert 2: Lemongrass Mousse brown sugar, jack fruit, whole wheat sorbet. This was delicious!
dessert 3: Tristar Strawberries fennel, yogurt, watermelon molasses. Another hit! This was my gf's favorite
dessert 4: Soft chocolate, beet, Long pepper, Ricotta Ice Cream. This was my favorite and I'm not even a chocolate person! The riccota ice cream is not that flavorful but it blends in perfectly with everything else. There are also some sort of peanut like things with this dessert. Very rich dish but so delicious.
dessert 5: Coffee Ice Cream pecan, cocoa, argan oil. The coffee ice cream was inflated making it airy. reminded me of bread in a way. This was also very good.
We were a complimentary treat of condensed milk ice cream and cocoa nibs i believe.
Highly recommended. I thnk I jizzed 7 times.

the russian coffee cake at Zabar's. it's like a coffee cake and bread pudding combined and had an orgy with pineapple, walnuts, and raisins. I had a bagel with whitefish and tried a small piece of the cake because I was planning on saving it for later. I must have ate the whole thing in 2 mins. It was a mostrous piece too at least a pound. lol..
