<content>We always take the dog out to a patio-type joint for his birthday and get him a plain hamburger patty and a few special cookies from 3 Dog. Usually, we have to find a spot where the dog can sit with us outside and enjoy his patty, where the staff gives him plenty of petting, and where they understand odd dog owners (in LA, this is no problem.) We also like good food and libations for us.

Finally, as few OTHER dogs as possible. My dog is terrified of dogs. Go figure.

Where can we go? Does Zeke's allow dogs on the patio?

So far, we've had luck at Lucky Baldwin's, The Gordon Beich in Burbank (no longer, I think we just found a really understanding wiatress), some place on 3rd in SM that raised eyebrows at us but went along, and a few places in Santa Barbera.

Suggestions? He turns 8 on the 20th.</content>

<content>I'm not sure how far you're willing to go, but there's a restaurant in West Hollywood called Basix Cafe on Santa Monica Blvd. that has a small outdoor patio. The food is very good. I especially like their breakfast dishes and I've seen them allow dogs outside in that patio.

That might be a place to check out.

Thanks,

<content>For my dog's birthday, we spend some time at the Huntington Beach dog beach, then head up Golden West Ave. in HB to the Park Bench Cafe, which is on your right, in Huntington Beach Central Park. Tables are outside with umbrellas. For humans, it's breakfast and lunch food. For the dog, there's a special menu with hamburger patty, hot dog or a bowl of kibble and plently of water in the dog bowls provided.

There do tend to be other dogs there, but the tables are fairly spread out so they aren't right on top of each other.

Or for a really big birthday bash, drive up to Carmel for the weekend.

<content>Yes, but my problem is that I need a place that allow dogs, but is't SWAMPED with them.

My dog is scared of dogs, he hates dogs. Therefore, being a dog, if confronted with one, he raises quite a ruckus. Best trained dog I've ever had, but thanks to a pomeranian and a JRT that attacked him as a puppy, he cannot stand dogs.

If you "always" see dogs there, I can't go!</content>

<content>Also, there's nowhere to sit at Abbot's Habit, just a bench that people lean on. Maybe one table.

You can sit across the street at the Mexican restaurant with a dog. Have done so many times. I'm really mentioning this not for the original poster but for people reading this thread to get ideas of where to take their own dogs.

<content>Susina Bakery and Cafe has sidewalk seating and are dog lovers. The food is yummy and they bake their own dog biscuits too. I see dogs there on occasion, but not too many dogs being walked by the place.
It's at Beverly east of La Brea
(No burgers, but across the street at Lulus maybe). </content>

<content>If you can travel an hour or so to Orange County:

There is a doggie store in Corona del Mar plaza where you can buy him furniture or clothes or homemade biscuits or . . ..

Then, maybe stop at Crystal Cove Promenade about 5 miles south of there for a Starbucks Coffee. Pacific Whey Cafe is right next door and Trader Joe's is at the south end of that parking lot.
http://www.shoptheirvinecompany.com/xqs-asp-id_40-xqe-neigh_Centers.htm

Then see if he likes it at Crystal Cove Beach across the street (enjoy the view), and opt for lunch at Madison Square Garden and Cafe in north Laguna Beach not far from there where he might be able to sit on his own metal bench in the front yard while you enjoy lunch at the table next to it and the roses and kangaroo paw plants (they look kind of like closed fox gloves, but smaller, and are purple) http://www.madisonsquare.com/

Maybe walk along Heisler Park after that (that's across Coast Highway at Cliff Drive traffic signal and past Las Brisas). Lots of grass there, too!

Then, possibly have dinner in a guest room at the Aliso Creek Inn (kind of 70'[s retro!). All rooms have a kitchen and many have a backyard. And, there are pretty good burgers at the Canyon Lodge American Grill (and other good dishes) there, too. (Just don't ask the bartender for a Jim's special for your dog.) http://www.alisocreekinn.com/

Then, in the morning, walk down that long and rocky road from your room to the Aliso Beach (1/10th of a mile). Walk up the water's edge until you see the Studio. http://www.montagelagunabeach.com/dining/dca_studio.html
Then walk up the stairs, turn left, walk past white rock roses and aloe plants along the cliff sidewalk back toward Treasure Island Park. Cross the street at Wessely Drive (sp?) and head on back to check out.

Fun factor will rate a lot higher than crowd factor. Though you might walk into a few leashes on the Montage cliffside sidewalk! One guy walks five of his dogs at one time on that sidewalk.

Better parking along Cliff Drive during the week than on weekends, though.

<content>I see the problem with going to a dog friendly place and not wanting other dogs around. My pooch had 2 wonderful Saturdays in Redondo Beach. We enjoyed fresh boiled crab and shrimp from Captain Kidds while he sat in the car in the adjacent parking lot and got a nose full of wonderfull smells. Then we packed up the leftovers in a ziploc and took a walk around the pier area with the pup (dogs not allowed on pier itself, but the adjacent area is cool)He loved the smells, the fishy treats, and slept really well that nite. Not any "dog" traffic around that area to speak of. </content>

<content>A number of the places on Second Street in Belmont Shore have outdoor patios on the street, and very often dogs are "seated" just outside the patio, adjacent to their owners' tables. Off the top of my head, this arrangement works at Babette's Feast, La Crepe, Bono's, Aroma di Roma, Coffee Bean, Open Sesame. I'm sure there are others I'm forgetting.</content>

<content>Most cities have health laws that prohibit animals, other than service animals, from entering restaurants. Having the dog with you but just outide a low wrought iron fence is a good alternative, IMHO. Most of those places are receptive to the idea and will help you out with a pan of water for the pooch.</content>

<content>Rick's Tavern on Main Street in Santa Monica is very dog-friendly. You can sit with the dog along the bar at the front window, or walk the dog right through the main area to a secluded patio in the back. It's a basic bar, but for bar food, it's surprisingly good. Waitresses are wonderful with dogs there. Actually, many places with tables along Main Street are pretty dog-friendly.

For a full-fledged all-day outing, take him to the mile-long Dog Beach at Huntington Beach. The Park Bench Cafe is a lovely spot in a nearby park with lots of outdoor tables. They cater to dogs with a full-fledged menu of canine treats. There will definitely be other dogs there, but tables are well-spaced.
