Best Boulder Restaurants?

Some friends of ours are moving from DC to Boulder, and we'd like to get them a gift certificate to a great Boulder restaurant. We're looking for something special but unpretentious, centrally located with great food and nice ambience. Suggestions?

Thank you!

Take a look at this thread (http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/679036), which is filled with Boulder recommendations. The best of the best is Frasca Food & Wine, understated and exceptional in terms of food, service and ambiance. It's expensive but worth it. If necessary, a ift certificate would help your friends "justify" a dinner there.

      I would agree with Claire.
Frasca is closing for September for renovations.
A second option is The Kitchen, also on Pearl Street.

        Frasca. Frasca. Frasca.
You can order a gift card from their secure web site:

The Meditteranean ("The Med") is hands down my favorite restaurant in Boulder.. a huge selection of tapas, wood fired pizzas, and other western meditteranean specialties. The prices are very reasonable.. take note howver, they dont accept reservations and dinnertime is usually packed. their happy hour selections are awesome. Also, L'Atelier is a hidden gem, you'd probably never notice its there if you weren't looking (despite being on Pearl St.). Exceptionally made French food, the escargots are my personal favorite; also the Vahlrona profiteroles when available.

There are very, very few "pretentious" restaurants in Boulder - jeans and other casualwear are welcome pretty much everywhere, even at Frasca.

If I was getting a gift certificate, I'd definitely go with a Big Red F gift card. It's good at several excellent local restaurants - Jax, West End, Centro, Zolo, and Happy (all of which share an owner, local restaurant mogul Dave Query) - which means they'll get the fun of picking one, or even trying a couple.

Another fine option would be SALT - a new place downtown with great food and ambiance.

Don't forget Johns. Great food and a wonderful, relaxed yet upscale atmosphere.
