Lush Gelato: Best gelato shop in the Bay opens new location in Berkeley (near Cheeseboard)

We went to the Lush Gelato off Piedmont today and were psyched to see a sign up announcing a new location on Shattuck (in the Gourmet Ghetto, near Cheeseboard) that apparently just opened yesterday. Don't see anything about it on the Web as of yet, so if anyone has the exact address and other details, please do post them here.

According to the girl we talked to, the new shop will boast 24 flavors daily, and they'll be serving some other items like espresso and paninis as well.

At the old shop, the four of us sampled an array of flavors, all excellent as usual. Some standouts that were new to me were the gianduja (chocolate hazelnut) gelato and the Meyer lemon sorbetto. Old standbys dulce de leche and creme fraiche were as fantastic as I remembered.

I'm excited for them -- I know the original location isn't the most ideal spot, as it's not really visible to the foot traffic on Piedmont proper. Hope folks will check out the new location and report back, as Lush is serving up the best gelato I've ever had, anywhere. Amazingly bold flavors (the perfect distillation of whatever flavor it's supposed to be) and the best texture. I'm really convinced that Federico (owner and gelato master) is a genius.

So it turns out the new location is inside the Epicurious Garden, at 1511 Shattuck, all the way in the back. Awesome selection of flavors (almost all of my favorites represented and, again, several I'd never seen before). They're also doing paninis (three different kinds, including one vegetarian option). Coffee, espresso drinks, and affogatos too.

As usual the staff is very accommodating and great about giving samples. Scoops are generous, and I love that they let you split a scoop between two different flavors.

Good stuff; I hope they do well. Didn't see any stools or other seating out when we went by tonight -- hopefully they'll get that set up so customers don't have to stand around eating their gelato (not that I'm complaining!).

This was a Ciao Bella very recently; didn't notice the changeover until after it happened. Big improvement. Quality seems the same as at the Piedmont site, which means, as you all know, best gelato in the Bay Area. Mixed scoop of cardamom + dulce de leche for $2.95 = happiness.

Brad, did you notice if they had any seats or stools out when you went?

We've still been going mostly to the Piedmont shop because it's closer, the parking's easier and there's somewhere to sit. But the flavor selection at the new location can't be beat, and I'd like to give the affogato a try.

yes, lots of lovely outdoor seating. Maybe 2 indoor seats. Great most of the time, bad in the rain/cold.

                1. Yep, two seats at the counter.

                2. The corridor from the street to the garden has a ceiling over it. Not sure how warm it is on a windy day.

                3. Tarragon = win.

                4. Banana dulce de leche = win, but not necessarily more of a win than the ordinary dulce de leche.

This is the second location of a much-lauded gelato shop on Piedmont Ave. in Oakland: http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/618843

            No relation to Ciao Bella.

The brand/chain Ciao Bella is still available at various places in the Bay Area, I'm sure, but they've vacated that spot in the Epicurious Garden. Great news for people in the East Bay who like good gelato.

Wow, this place is great. It will definitely help me cope with Sketch's closure. Balanced flavors, great texture, superb ingredients. It beats the pants off of the other east bay spots and Bi Rite, and for me it ties with Humphrey Slocombe for overall ice cream/gelato exeperience

Sketch will be selling pints of Burnt Caramel and Vanilla any minute now. http://www.facebook.com/#!/pages/Sket...

And I agree, Lush rocks! The Cowgirl Creamery Fromage Blanc is outstanding.

Stopped by today. Everything I tried was incredibly flavorful and creamy. A small scoop of strawberry basil gelato was a perfect not too guilty treat.

I love their basil gelato and hope it's coming back in season because haven't seen it for awhile. Glad to see it's expanding but I hope he still keeps the Piedmont location open because it's closer to me. ;-)
