  1. Ha! I posted the same question last night but for some reason it never showed up! Enjoy the show tonight, we're going tomorrow - driving in from CT.

This site may be helpful - there's a list of restaurants in Montclair down the right. Haven't had a chance to explore it yet. Would love some local insight.

Enjoy the show and please post if you have any luck with food!

Montclair has a wide variety of restaurants, from super casual quick places to some really nice places to get some great food. This may be of some help to you:

            Cuban Pete's

Bring your own wine and they will make sangria as they don't have a liquor license (I think that is correct)

            Cuban Petes
428 Bloomfield Ave, Montclair, NJ 07042

UGH. Sorry--NOT a fan of Cuban Pete's AND the service SUCKS there, so you might not even get dinner in time. Lots of better (imo) recs, some walkable, others aren't, and a search on this and other food sites will yield detailed info:

Egan's Pub on Walnut Street (all of about 3 NYC avenues away)--not BYO, not ethnic, but others may be interested so I'm listing it

Next Door on Bloomfield Ave is the sister resto of Blu, which is fantastic but not where you want to go before Wilco--it's BYO, and you can go the (excellent) burger route or full entrees, all under $20ish each. Make a res if you can--it's a tiny place.

Raymond's on Church Street is a terrific general menu--salads, burgers, entrees...BYO.

Tuptim has v. good Thai (imo)--on Bloomfield Ave. BYO.

Chengdu 1, which is in Cedar Grove has some fantastic authentic Sichuan. BYO. LOOOOOOOVE this place. LOVE. IT. If you like good spice, GO!!!

Dai Kitchi is in "upper" Montclair--GREAT sushi, BYO.

That ought to get you started... :-)

-Sesame (Chinese) is on the corner next to the theater but I think it's overpriced for what it is.

              Church Street Cafe
29 Church St, Paterson, NJ 07505

              Chengdu 1
89 Pompton Ave, Cedar Grove, NJ 07009

              Next Door
556 Bloomfield Ave, Montclair, NJ 07042

              1. re: Curlz

Never had that problem at Pete's, hopefully the OP found someplace last night.

                1. re: roro1831

My bad on the timing...Wilco is there again tonight!

                  1. re: Curlz

Yes they are. I tried to get tickets when the went on sale. Within minutes they were all gone and the cheapest I could find was $150, which I refuse to pay. I'd rather spend it on food.

          2. re: Spiritchaser

Thanks. In the mood for Middle Eastern. Can anyone rank Jackie's Grillette, Falafel Hut and Beyond Pita in order of preference? We will probably need something fairly quick and casual.

            Beyond Pita
82 Church St Ste A, Montclair, NJ 07042

            Jackie's Grillette
614 Valley Rd, Montclair, NJ 07043

            Falafel Hut
213 Bellevue Ave, Montclair, NJ 07043

            1. re: lunabug

I like both Jackie's and Falafel Hut but both are in "upper" Montclair which is a bit out of the way if you are going to the Wellmont. Beyond Pita has great food but there is nowhere to sit -- I mean, nowhere -- so you'd have to eat in your car.

              Beyond Pita
82 Church St Ste A, Montclair, NJ 07042

              Falafel Hut

        1. We were just in Montclair to see David Gray at the Wellmont. Based on several reveiws my husband chose Ruthies BBQ They specialize in BBQ and pizza. It was a nbeighborhood restaurant with a small but cute (diner style) seating BYOB. I had the Ruthies pizza and my husband had the ribs. My pizza with traditional toppings plus asiago was AWESOME. My husbands ribs were good, but the accompanying fires and slaw were AWESOME. This is a place to try. I will never look at fries again the same way. The owner was friendly and fun. Try it!

I would agree with this review of Ruthie's. I know some in the past have complained about the owner's attitude, but this is not my experience, he seems engaged and friendly. The pork ribs are a bit on the fatty side, but considering their formidable size there is more than enough succulent smoky meat to satisfy. Their double fried hand-cut Belgian-style fries absolutely rock, especially when accompanied by one of their tasty dipping sauces. BYO is always a plus and nicely offsets their slightly higher than average prices for barbecue.

          2. Wilco were great. Unfortunately traffic to get up to Montclair very bad so had no time for dinner. Afterwards - post 11pm - everything was closed - or closing. end up going to a not too bad - actually quite good newish diner on Bloomington near GSP. Thanks for all the reco's. There is always next time.

            1. I was looking for a food rec in Montclair for the Disco Biscuits show, but then I realized that I probably wouldnt be in the food eating mood lol

We were just really hungry by the time we found somewhere to sit down... could have eaten a scabby donkey fried as they say in Cumbria
