Reviews of Starry Kitchen in Downyown LA?

  • 6

Nguyen and Thi Tran, the rogue chefs who use to run a covert culinary operation out of their North Hollywood apartment, have opened a brick and motar place in downtown LA -- Starry Kitchen (currently Lunch only). Starry Kitchen serves pan-Asian fusion cuisine (i.e. Hoisin Burgers, Lemon Grass Chicken, etc.) -- current menu is avaialble on its web site.

Has anyone eaten at Starry Kitchen?

  1. Yes, I have tried them. I had their bánh mì with coconut pork and it was pretty tasty. It was saucier than any bánh mì I've had which made the baguette a little bit soggy, but the flavor was good enough to overlook that. I think they change their proteins regularly so not sure if that coconut pork is still available. Overall, I would say Starry Kitchen is a welcome lunchtime option on Bunker Hill

I agree. I've had two of their pork concoctions as well. One of them was described as Taiwanese fried pork chop. At $7.50 or so, it's obviously more than a banh mi in Alhambra (your lament re: Nom Nom truck, as I recall, equally applicable here) but at least it comes with a side dish. Frankly, though, I'd rather have the sandwich without the side of fried rice or whatever for a buck less. Still, it is indeed a welcome addition to the lunchtime scene.

Hi, first of all, thanks for having us in Cal Plaza. It's been a daunting task to come in and try to win people's support, and we're gonna try our best.

Secondly, just wanted to let you know you CAN actually have the sandwich w/o the side (a la carte) if you would like for a reduced price. I think it's $6.50 vs $7.50 w/ a side (of your choice). There are so many permutations (sorry, that's my computer science/engineering background talkin') and combinations that we can't list everything on the board, but we are very flexible and amenable to different options for customers if you/they ask.

When in doubt, just ask! :)

    2. Are they open on the weekend yet? I checked the site and couldn't find the hours.

Hi, this is Nguyen, 1/2 of Starry Kitchen. Hope you guys don't hate me for chiming in (I can't help it! ^^) Unfortunately, I don't think we'll be opening on weekends anytime soon. That area is LITERALLY a ghost town on the weekends. I might try for a lunch on a Sat or Sun as we continue to grow though.

We WILL on the other hand be opening up for HH/Dinners on Thurs+Fridays in the near future. We just wanted to get lunch down to a science (and basically make sure we didn't F' up) before we did that. So hopefully we can have you over then. :)

I've heard great things about this restaurant from friends who work in the area. Hope to get there soon. Nice to hear from the owner.
