Looking for great, reasonably-priced Eastern European food

I'm looking for homemade, stick-to-your-ribs Eastern European food, like the kind my grandmother makes. Polish, Ukrainian, Hungarian...you get the idea. I would like it to be reasonably priced--no entree priced over $20--and neighborhood doesn't really matter (but below 14th earns bonus points!).

I've tried Veselka and it's not my thing. Pierogi were a little soggy and bland, and the fried onions were swimming in a pool of their own greasy--make that a cold pool.

Thanks!

it's not precisely Eastern European, but Kafana on Ave C has terrific Serbian food! Mmm... Kafana

Little Poland is much better than Veselka. The Ukrainian Restaurant next door is also good.

If you check the Outer Boroughs, the options are more plentiful with better quality.

Katja is Austrian, it is not Polish or Ukrainian or Hungarian. The food is not the "grandmother" type stick to the ribs food.

Ukrainian Restaurant on 2nd Ave near 9th St.

Other than that....it's going to be Greenpoint or other parts of Brooklyn.

Yes, Ukrainian East Village Restaurant, great cheap, and just like my grandma used to make.
