Bars in Brighton Beach?
I am venturing to Brighton Beach for dinner at either Cafe Glechik or Cafe Kashkar. Can anyone recommend a bar nearby with good local color?
Thanks in advance.

Gambrinus is a lot of fun. Absurd kitsch, half-mute, brutish waiters in sailor uniforms right out of Jean Genet's Querelle, the Baltika flows freely, etc. Order the red caviar and blini.

Yes, about 1/4 of the seating space is outdoors, but in spite of umbrellas they'll close it down if it's rainy. I haven't eaten too many of the dishes, as Gambrinus is more of a bar than restaurant for me. What I've had -- appetizer stuff -- has been solid.

If the weather is going to be nice, i would overpay for a drink at one of the places on the boardwalk. plenty of local color strolling by and drinking next to you.

Kebeer is about half a block away from Cafe Kashkar. Sietsema liked it - http://www.villagevoice.com/2009-10-1...
I've poked my head in a few months ago and it seemed a reasonable spot for a few beers. I hope you like Kashkar better than I did.

re: Bob Martinez
Kebeer, despite the weird (and sort of lame) name, is actually really good. The beer selection is good (think German and Belgian, not Russian) and well cared for , and the bartenders' knowledge of beer is generally than their knowledge of the English language.
Prices very reasonable, I think half liters of Kwak and some random German schwartzbier came to about $9 total.
