Hamburger Dives Charleston, SC

Alright, I'm being just "a bit" specific here. Looking for folks opinions about the best hamburger in the Charleston area. I'm NOT looking for recommendations like "FIVE GUYS" as I'm looking for more of a dive, or at least a privately owned (local) restaurant that has no more than 1 or 2 locations. I'm also NOT looking for burgers, like those mentioned in similar threads, that are 8oz to a pound and cost upwards of $12. You can go to many restaurants in Charleston and find pretentious burgers like that & it's not what this thread is about.

I'm asking about a "regular" burger that just simply stands out. Burgers that have patties weighing in at 1/3 pound or less (I don't mind double or triple small patties, but the giant patty sizes you get at some places is ridiculous). The bread doesn't have to be too fancy, just good. Cheese or other condiments (bacon) are a good addition, but shouldn't be needed to make the burger stand out.

Any great "working man" burgers around Charleston?

  1. It's not in Charleston, but if your ever in the Walterboro area, there is a place called Dairyland. You order outside at the counter with just a few picnic tables. Not worth a special visit, but the burgers are hand-pattied and a double bacon cheeseburger ATW will set you back $3.79 and I think it's probably exactly what you're looking for.

    1. I've always loved the burgers at the Griffon in Charleston - it's near Waterfront Park downtown.

        I agree! Griffon is great.

The absolute best burger in the area (IMHO, of course) is at Poe's on Suliivans. They grind their own meat so it can be cooked to order. For a great dive joint burger go to Dolly's Idle Hour in N' Charleston. The waitresses there are the best.

          Sue's right.
Poe's reigns supreme and the vibe is just awesome. Great on tap beers to boot.
Idle Hour in North Chuck is old school & that may be what you are really after.
          Just a note:
$10 & it's upscale, but High Cotton's happy hour burger is Really good, with live music as well.

      2. Moe's Crosstown Tavern. Esquire Magazine called it one of the best burgers in America. PLUS (added bonus) it is a total off the beaten path dive bar.
