I have a flight arriving at MCI around 9am and will be getting a rental car and waiting until 12:30pm when a friend arrives, before driving to Kirksville, MO. Rather than taking a cat nap in the car, I figured I'd find a nice place for breakfast/brunch... Any suggestions? As a New Englander, I always take advantage of an opportunity to dine at Waffle House, but am sure Kansas City has more to offer. ;)

Looks like you would have plenty of time to visit Corner Cafe in Riverside at the corner of Vivion and Gateway Drive. Riverside is about five miles south of KCI, just south of I-29/ I-635. Corner Cafe serves great, hot, fresh, Southern/Midwest cooking. You will forget Waffle House. Get a stickey bun to go.

Second that. You won't even have to deal with too much traffic at that time of the morning.

May be too late, but I like Roxanne's Cafe in Parkville at 9 Highway and 64th St. Not fancy, but very much a house-made kind of place. Good Midwestern classics in an idiosyncratic space. The coffee is much better than average, and the people are just great.

When in Kirksville, go to Pagliai's! I say that only because I went to college there and have hazy fond memories. OK, don't go on my recommendation after all.
