Dinner rec for Oakland/Berkeley tonight

  • 9

Hi there,

I'm coming up to the Bay Area tonight for a quick work trip and need a recommendation for dinner tonight. Coworkers and I are staying in Emeryville, so Berkeley or Oakland seem to make the most sense.

Looking for something mid-priced ($15-25 for mains), but would splurge a bit for the right experience. A place that serves cocktails would be preferred, but a good wine list or beer selection would be ok, too. We'll probably be eating on the late side, maybe around 9ish. Could be hip or an old stand by. I've previously enjoyed Cesar and the Chez Panisse Cafe, but would like to try something new. Coworkers are moderately adventurous, so I've got a good amount of latitude in what I propose. Bonus points for any nearby bars for afterward.

Thanks in advance!

  1. A Cote has cocktails, the most diverse by-the-glass wine selection in the Bay Area, and a good beer list with some great Belgians. There are several old-school bars within a few blocks: George & Walt's, McNally's, Ye Old Hut.

Pizzaiolo, Adesso, Dopo, and Boot & Shoe Service are some other good options. Pizzaiolo and A Cote take reservations. There are lots of bars near Boot & Shoe.

    1. In Emeryville, with cocktails, you have Bucci's and Townhouse. I mostly go there for special occasion work lunches, and they're both 'sturdy'.

In Berkeley there are plenty of options. To get the ball rolling, I'd suggest Sea Salt, T Rex, Wood Tavern... If full bar is optional, there'd be a lot more options.

Wood Tavern is great if you can get a reservation on such short notice. Those other places are all in relatively out-of-the-way, otherwise dead-at-night locations without much in the way of bars nearby.

      2. Maybe try Gather in Berkeley? Close to downtown and across from the Berkeley campus. Prices are moderate and nice casual vibe in large dining area.

Oh, and I wanted to mention Corso too, Italian restaurant on Shattuck on the way to Chez Panisse.

        2. Mua is convenient to Emeryville and open until 11 on weekdays. We usually go with friends, order multiple dishes to be served sequentially and share. Then check the various art work that rotates through.

          1. All of the earlier suggestions are good; and I'll add Flora (downtown Oakland) to the list.

            1. Thanks for everyone's recommendations!!

Not the best ending to the story: the work meeting that brought us up to the Bay Area kept us wrapped up so late we didn't end up going out for a bite after all.

At least I've got some great choices for my next trip!

Thanks for following up, even if you didn't have a chance to act on our suggestions. It's amazing how many people never say "thank you" to people they asked to help them!
