Can I bring hummus on a plane?? Please help!!

I just got these "Sabra to go" cups of hummus with pretzels to bring on an airplane trip, so confident was I that hummus is not a prohibited substance. But now after some googling I'm having second thoughts. Is hummus in the same league as peanut butter or yogurt and thus verboten in quantities over 3 oz?

My hummus got confiscated at SEATAC. TSA said that anything "spreadable or pourable" is a liquid or gel and prohibited over the 3oz deal. Total bummer.

As a TSA employee, I can tell you, if the hummus is over 3.4 fl. oz. they can NOT go, if under that amount they can go.. they are a paste and that rules them out as part of your liquid carry-on.

Thank you so much for replying. The hummus part of the package (it comes in two separable parts) is 3.5 oz, so I guess I will be eating my hummus and pretzels at 4:30 am before going through security. :)

I'm not sure if this is an option, but can you buy some bread and make a hummus sandwich? I've brought those on board without issue in the past.

if you happen to have a couple of small plastic containers handy, just divide the hummus into two smaller portions and transfer. or - and i know this sounds kind of odd but it will work - plastic baggies. just double them or seal VERY well to prevent leakage.

The plastic bag idea is an interesting one, and probably more space-efficient (given that I'm assuming this has to go in the quart size bag with my other gels/liquids) than the smallest plastic Gladware containers I have. I think I might do that, actually. Then I can just kind of squeeze it out onto the pretzels. I'm so glad there are kindred spirits who understand my hummus dilemma and don't think I'm insane... my boyfriend doesn't think it's worth the trouble.
