ISO Harissa, mid Hudson Valley

georgeb Mar 29, 2010 08:11 AM

As the title say, looking for harissa in the mid hudson valley (Poughkeepsie, Newburgh, Kingston). I have already checked Adams and Hannaford.

Any tips appreciated.

i haven't checked, but stop and shop carries a better-than-expected (for a chain store) variety of international spices, you might want to check that aisle. i know i get my jerk flavoring from there, i think my sriracha was from there?, and i've got british / irish foods from there as well. it would likely only be in their 1-2 aisles of "international" foods.

I went through the same search in the Capital Region and finally found harissa (in a tube or small can) at Roma Foods (Latham and Saratoga Springs). I don't know if Roma ships. You might want to order online (if shipping isn't prohibitive). This is one of my sources if you ever get into NYC (not sure if they ship):

Adams in Newburgh has harissa, as well as preserved lemons. Aisle 1 next to the olives and capers. 8.95oz jar for $6.99

Adam's in Kingston carries it as well. I can't recall which aisle off hand though.

Please try and find it at Adams in Kingston... I scoured the place and found nothing. Was it in a jar or a tube?

I purchased a tube of it about 6 months ago. I'll try and remember to look next time I stop into Adams.

I am *fairly* sure they also used to stock tubes of it in the market at Gadaleto's in New Paltz but it's been a long while since I've stopped in their.

So I stopped into the Kingston Adam's yesterday and did NOT see harissa. I'll report back if it ever pops up again.

                Looks like this (Newburgh)

I couldn't find it either, initially. Had to ask for it. They moved it

hmmm...wonder if the kingston Adam's moved it as well. Probably should have asked while I was looking for it.

I buy DEA harissa in a tube (product of France) and it's around $4. Comes in a yellow box, 5.3 oz./150g.

Have not seen it in a jar. Just a tube or small can.

definitely further afield than you are looking, but i was in the new fairway and sampled harissa today, having never knowingly had it before can't help with how good/bad. it was from a jar over near the HUGE olive oil section. good luck finding it.

Thanks for all the tips. I found some at the Crate and Barrel store on Rte. 17 near Paramus.
(Normally, I wouldn't drive that far, but was down there for another reason.) It was cheap at $6 for about 8 ounces.

If you're in Paramus, Fairway also has it for $4.

Stopped into Bistro to go on Rte. 28 between kingston and Woodstock yesterday and they had cans of Harrissa for sale as well as a good amount of other interesting odds and ends.
