Mini Review -- Mengrai Thai

  • 5

I must say Mengrai has moved to one of the top restaurants in Toronto for me at their price point.

They juggled a bunch of us on Saturday with very odd schedules, never losing their cool, and delivering delicious hot food on time with professionalism and warmth. I really enjoyed the spicing and complexity in the sauces.

They have won my heart for the combination of excellent service and excellent food, and I will be returning there time and time again because of that. Also I need to try their prix fixe before it goes away.

  1. Pincus,

I've never been to Mengrai Thai but have been to Sukhothai. Have you eaten there and if so, how do the two compare?

Mengrai has more expensive dishes than Sukhothai. But not all are super expensive, and you can (as far as I can tell) mix and match from the a la carte (cheaper) and set menu.

Flavour-wise, Mengrai might have a bit of an edge, but they are very close in terms of execution on dishes to my tastebuds. I would need to eat more at both to make an accurate assessment (oh, what a difficult task!).

For what they offer, the service in both is comparable, i.e. excellent.

The atmosphere is the biggest difference. Sukothai is a pleasant hole in the wall. Mengrai is a beautiful space for a leisurely meal.

That is so far from my experience that it's hard to believe you are describing the same restaurant.
I tried Mengrai twice and BOTH times were an 'organizational' disaster. The food was pretty good (even the dishes we received (on one visit) that we didn't order were OK - the ones we ordered never appeared). I was subjected to significant upsell - "you MUST try a special dish we have tonight" that was the most expensive dish on or off their menu.
But the long wait, the delivery of dishes to wrong tables, the general feeling of chaos all made for a barely enjoyable evening. I also found the price at the higher end for Thai restaurants (more expensive than Young Thailand for example).
I enjoy SukhoThai (although they are not the cheapest either, I can easily taste the quality ingredients). My only disappointments at Sukhothai were during their 'hot table' phase - now abandoned.

Well, the arrival of my dining companions was also chaotic. All I can say is that for us, that night, the service was excellent.

As for price, it seemed comparable (from what I remember) to Ivory Thailand, which is the only other "high end" Thai restaurant I've been to in town. Will have to check out Young Thailand sometime.

Sukhothai will remain my go-to Thai restaurant for the forseeable future, but it's good to have some more refined environments to choose from.

IMO the only thing Mengrai has on Sukhothai is atmosphere. I went to Mengrai (my second visit) last Friday after about 6 consecutive Thai meals at Sukhothai. The table was nice and cozy (lots of pillows)... we ordered the prix fixe menu. There were three of us and we shared mains of cashew beef, pineapple and leachy chicken and pad thai. The appetizers and second course both came with a generic sweet chili sauce, what my ex-roomate referred to as "Swedish Ketchup", which was somewhat disappointing. The mains were all “ok”, but do not stand up to the flavour of Sukothai. The mengrai pad thai was slightly gooey, mostly clumped together noodles – whereas the padthai at Sukho is almost fluffy in comparison. Also, more levels of flavour at Sukho. I could go on, but I think I have made my point. Sukho definately over Mengrai on food, but overall Mengrai is not a terrible sit down experience.
