Visiting from Boston one weekend in may - suggestions needed

My DH and I are going to be spending the memorial day weekend in SD from Boston. Sat night is taken by an engagement party but late dining friday, break/lunch sat, all day sunday and breakfast monday are open! Staying in La Jolla area, will have a car. I've been to Chino Farms once and plan on going back. Other than that we need help! Moderate pricing (or cheap even) would be key. The thing we miss the most is good mexican food here on the east coast so suggestions for that would be great. Seafood is a pass for us since we can get lobster etc..pretty easily. Thanks for any help!!

  1. I would suggest going to Bull Taco in Cardiff. Great tacos and an even better view. Whisk n Ladle in La jolla is a great lunch spot. I also just got back from Cucina Urbana tonight. I've been 3 times in the last month. Great spot one of the best in SD and nothing is over 20 bucks. What part of Boston you from? I'm originally from Revere.

Those sound great! Cucina Urbana sounds like something we will definitely check out. We live in the South End - lots of great food but fancier than we would like for regular nights out.

    2. in LJ The Cottage on Fay St. is great for breakfast/lunch. www.cottagelajolla.com

The obvious picks for Mexican would be:

        Super Cocina on University

Aqui es Texcoco on Broadway in Chula Vista

        Mama Testa's in Hillcrest

Mariscos El Pescador Truck on Industrial in Chula Vista

        Mama Testa
1417 University Ave Ste A, San Diego, CA 92103

        Super Cocina
3627 University Ave., San Diego, CA 92104

      2. Excellent suggestions from SD Goumand, on Bull Taco and the Captain..
Cottage for breakfast or La Valencia back patio with sweeping ocean views.
Since your in LJ, Porkyland's has some great carnitas burritos..and I like Don Bravo Bahia taco shop in Bird Rock/LJ for an excellent lobster burrito..fish tacos are pretty good too.
Love Boston and I can't get enough of Locke-Ober and Neptunes!

        1. If you're going to do Cucina Urbana, then that'd probably work well for your late Friday dinner since you'll be coming from that area near the airport anyway.

Another good option for a casual, cheap, excellent lunch in La Jolla is El Pescador. It's seafood but their sandwiches are great and probably different types of fish than you have in Boston.

Sunday would be good for your serious Mexican eating since you'll have more time. I 2nd Captain Jack's suggestions of Super Cocina, Aqui es Texcoco, and the Mariscos El Pescador Truck. A few other options are the Torta Ahogada truck in the same parking lot as Mariscos El Pescador, Mariscos German, and Tacos El Paisa.

The Linkery could be good for dinner on Sunday since that's their meat smoking day anyway. Other dinner options include: Starlite (another good option near the airport for Friday too), Cafe Chloe, Farmhouse Cafe, Alchemy, Jayne's Gastropub, Blind Lady Alehouse, Ritual Tavern, Pizzeria Bruno Napoletano, and Cavaillon (good Sunday brunches too).

          Super Cocina

          Tacos El Paisa
          840 S 47th St, San Diego, CA 92113

          Cavaillon Restaurant
14701 Via Bettona, Suite 200, San Diego, CA 92127

          Ritual Tavern

Make sure you make a reservation at CU. They book up very fast.

Here are the pics from my three visit. Tried pretty much the whole menu.

just made my reservations for the night we come in - will definitely post a review.
Im thinking super cocina for now, but will talk to DH - he likes to be near the water - any good enough mexican near water to make him happy? (he's less picky than me)

bull taco. It is on the cliff over looking the ocean in cardiff. Not really mexican but good street tacos.

On Sunday the Torta Ahogada truck does Carne en su Jugo. This is a big specialty in Jalisco, and I don't know of any place in SD serving it. It's simple, but simply great. Karne Garibaldi in Guadalajara serves pretty much Carne en su Jugo only in several sizes. They claim to be the fastest restaurant in the world, and they're about right. Food is on the table as soon as your behind hits the seat. The torta truck isn't quite that fast ;-). Carne en su Jugo is either $7.50 or $8.00

If I may ask, what is Carne en su Jugo? I've never heard of that before.

At least where I live (Yuma AZ), it is beef pieces cooked in a brothy sauce with bacon and beans. When done well, it is very tasty.

            3. Los Cuatro Milpas on Logan under the Coronado Bride is wonderful -- super authentic, super taasty, and the lone really moves fast. There is nothing like it in Boston -- not even close

Aslo, dim sim or seafood at JAsmine is very good.
