Dining recs in StL for out of town visitors

ddfry3 Mar 27, 2010 04:35 PM

My sister and her boyfriend (30-somethings) are coming to town at the end of April. We will be dining on Saturday, lunch and perhaps dinner, since we will be out and about seeing things. She lives in DC, so there are many fine dining places to be found in that area. Trying to think of unique places, doesn't mean expensive necessarily, but high quality, preferably locally sourced, with good vegetarian (not vegan) option for my girlfriend. The rest of us are meat-eaters.

Thought about al fresco dining....weather should be pretty nice then, which brings to mind the CWE. Maybe Pi? Not sure if they will have tables like the Loop location.

Thought about Winslow's Home for lunch, great food and unique.

Other ideas?

one thing we don't have much of in DC is good old-school red sauce Italian - it's either high end or crap. so maybe someplace on the Hill, there's one place that has a nice patio and bocce court whose name escapes me around the corner from Amighetti's. mostly just sandwiches but great STL style pizza (minus the provel)

Good call, and my sis confirmed this...she's a foodie, too. Any recs on the Hill? I like LoRusso's and Trattoria Marcella, slightly off the Hill.

hill food, you are thinking of Milo's. Great place to sit outside, have a great sandwich, pizza, beers and a little bocce... At the corner of Marconi and Wilson.

My favorite place on the Hill is Lorenzos. They may have tables out on the patio if the weather is nice. I love Trattoria Marcella, actually my favorite Italian food in the whole area, but not on the Hill proper.

You want unique? I will bet that Washington DC does not have a restaurant like Iron Barley, where they pay no attention to the decor and focus totally on the food. You can dine outdoors in the back. Iron Barley has never disappointed me (and I am vegetarian). You will need a car.

gee thanks greg I was there this weekend with time to kill and couldn't find it for a late Saturday afternoon refresher. ehh next time. southside places are in business either forever or barely ever.

Doug: of the many DC places that focus on food and are acclaimed do indeed spend too much time and money on decor. I will have to try IB at some point during or after my transition back..
