There is supposed to be a very good place near Yorktown, but I don't know the name of it. My other Taste Buds will know it, and will probably respond to this posting when they see it. If you are ever on Rt. 460 near Waverly, VA, then go to Cowlings BBQ.

      Pierce's Barbecue in Williamsburg, VA

Far beyond decent. It's my favorite, and I consider myself a BBQ afficianado. It is not that East NC vinegary stuff. It is a slow smoked wonder with a complex tomato based sauce. Texture is wonderful as the charred bits add to the overall effect.
Your friend might be referring to The County Grill in Yorktown on Rt. 17. It's pretty good, and a fun place with great drink specials and more menu choices that Pierce's.
They offer many kinds of sauces.

        Hello Bfoodie,

There really isn't a place in Newport News. I'd say stay far away from Pierces if he knows east NC BBQ. We can all argue but "East NC vinegary stuff" is one of the best types of BBQ out there. If you want a good pork sandwich (not really BBQ), ice cream, nostalgia and a great place to visit, try Doumar's in Norfolk. It's not that far away.
