rworange Mar 26, 2010 12:30 AM

It is about time someone Californized Eastern European food.

There are items on the Lokal menu such as
- PETALUMA CHICKEN PAPRIKASH POT PIE
- TWO DOG DIPPER (NO BUN) TARRAGON/CURRY
- SPAETZLE & CHEESE ADD CARAMELIZED ONIONS OR BACON

They were closed when I walked by. Anyone tried it?

Had lunch there on Memorial Day. Inside seemed a little dark and quite empty when we walked in, on the early side of lunch. But there are tables outside, in the patio area in the back, that provide for some nice, shady beer-drinking and sausage-eating. It's Hungarian-esque, with a small selection of German and Belgian beers on tap.

The sausages are local, from Caggiano. The bratwurst was juicy and flavorful, served with onions and peppers in a roll. Bacon-y potato salad on the side. The meatballs in the meatball sub are made with lesco, the Hungarian red pepper condiment -- tangy and moist. Peppers and cheese melted on top, crisp paprika-dusted French fries on the side.

Service was really friendly and warm.

Thanks. I've been wonndering what this was all about, but left the area before I could tryy it.

They might have trouble competing with Mondo which makes its own sausage and has a whole lot more beers on tap. Maybe they will work the Eastern European angle more

I didn't realize the sausage at Mondo was homemade, but after a lunch there I didn't find much to recommend it, other than the beer. The food was entirely generic.

I lucked out on my one and only Mondo visit. I went in to try the burger which has had some good comments, but the duck sausage was the special for that day so I got that and it was pretty good.

Looks like beer is the latest trend in Sonoma with Public House opening soon. The owner was one of the original brewmeister at Lagunitas. . There's also Sonoma Springs Brewery and this summer’s Dean Biersch’s Hopmonk Tavern will open.

We had a nice dinner at Lokal yesterday. We ate outside on a warm evening (relatively warm for us, shivering in Berkeley, not so warm for Sonoma). Very low-key, friendly. Not expensive.

I had the mixed sausage grill ($11) and others had the stuffed cabbage ($14) and the fish special (grilled salmon, $17). We enjoyed a side dish of spaetzle with caramelized onions -- very rich and flavorful.
Add this to the list of places that do not charge corkage, though I imagine most people will be drinking beer here.

Had a very late lunch/ early light dinner at Lokal yesterday- very good chicken paprikash and excellent goulash with spaetzle.

They were out of several beers, which our server explained was because they had a large crowd for the baseball game Saturday night, but you could do far worse than the St. Feuillien triple I had.

This is my new favorite spot on the square; we're already plotting our return.
