Great places for foodies to shop
Just coming to NY next week from Chicago and wondering if you can tell me some great places to go for spices and cooking goodies. I have been to Zabar's and felt like I was in heaven. So use that as your guide. I would love to go to some cool places. Not real into Indian or Middle Eastern which I found a lot of when I googled it. Thanks!

Kalustyan's on Lexington Avenue has lots of wonderful spices. It is Indian/Middle Eastern oriented, but has spices from all over the world in various sizes, along with rice, grains, beans, and great dried goods. Go there for very fresh spices. Visit Dean and Deluca on Broadway in SoHo for a fantastic selection of gourmet goods. Visit H & H bagels for fantastic bagels. Visit DiPalo's in Little Italy for all types of Italian goods from all regions of Italy, especially great cheeses. Did you visit Zabar's housewares deparment for cooking items? Their prices are the best and the selections are unsurpassed. Visit Katz's for amazing pastrami. Visit the Union Square Greenmarket for amazing varieties of all types of produce, cheeses, breads, seafood and meat. Have a great time in the city.
Ciao.

Union Square greenmarket- plarticularly on Fridays and Saturdays. Even this time of year, there is still plenty of great stuff to be had. This time of year my favorites are Flying Pigs Farm for some of the best pork products you've ever tasted- chops, roasts, bacon, great smoked ham, 3-Corner Field Farm for amzing lamb (the best merguez sausage in the city) and great sheep's cheese, Quattro (sat. only) for poulktry and game birds-- I especially love their smoked chicken and turkey, Blue Moon and Pura Vida for fish, and Wild Hive Bakery (not there right now, but soon) and Cayuga Organics for the best dried beans and grain. (I'm particularly fond of their faro.)

re: coasts
Love Chelsea Market as well, pretty much everything you could ever want all under one (massive) roof! I'm also a fan of Gourmet Garage (as TT88 mentioned) & Citarella.
