Botan Rice Candy!
Delicious childhood candy, I want to recreate you! Am trying to figure out how to make this. I suspect that it would be a process similar to making Turkish Delights, but would like other people's input on this.
Ingredients list via Wiki:
glucose syrup (corn starch, water), sugar, sweet rice, water, lemon flavor, orange flavor, FD&C Red No. 40 (allura red AC).
Alternate ingredient list: millet jelly (millet starch, water), sugar, sweet rice, water, lemon flavor, orange flavor, FD&C red no. 40 (allura red AC)
I don't have any orange flavoring right now, but I do have lemon juice and lemon extract. So I made an experiment to see which one would taste the most like botan rice candy. I put 1 tsp of cornstarch & 1 tbsp of sugar in a small glass of water. I then split that mixture into 3 bowls, and in the first one I added 1 tsp of lemon juice, the 2nd tsp lemon extract, and the 3rd 1/2 tsp both lemon extract and juice. The best result was the bowl with both the extract and juice. I'll make this experiment again once I have some kind of orange flavoring.

I am almost sure the flavoring is yuzu citrus. You may also want to reference kibi dango. Looking forward to seeing your results.
