I need a good place in the boondocks! (Wake Forest)
We live in Wake Forest now and I just realized I'm driving all the way across the triangle, or at least most of the way into Raleigh, for almost everything. Grand Asia, Neomonde, El Mandado, the farmer's market, Petra, Clyde Cooper's, Allen & Son, it seems like everything is south and west of me through town traffic. Does anybody know some good places to eat OR shop that are in the country north or east of Wake Forest? There's got to be some good BBQ joints or a Mexican place/taqueria that feeds the folks up in Henderson or somewhere.
4000 Atlantic Ave Ste 168, Raleigh, NC 27604
Wake Forest has it's own farmer's market every Saturday morning: http://www.wakeforestfarmersmarket.org/
Also, I haven't had the food there but there's a large Mexican restaurant at The Factory called Las Palmas, I believe.
I will second Tropical Pickin Chicken, their chicken and plantains are excellent.
Las Palmas Restaurant
1004 W Georgia Rd Ste B, Simpsonville, SC 29680
Holden's BBQ - Youngsville on US 1 just past the Sheetz. Very erratic hours, though.
Bella Italia Pizzeria - Capcom Blvd. in WF
Tropical Pickin Chicken - Just off S. Main before The Factory. Very good Cuban sandwiches and nice owner.
DaVinci - Rogers Rd before Heritage. Old-style butcher and good sandwiches. Will custom make sausages if you order a minimum of 5 lb.
Murphy House - in Louisburg. Good country buffet, maybe even better than the late Johnson's Farmers Market in Youngsville.
That's all I can come up with off the top of my head. I'm sure you'll get more good suggestions, though.
Murphy House Restaurant
108 S Bickett Blvd, Louisburg, NC 27549
Johnson's Farmers Market Restaurant

Bella Italia Pizzeria

Just to clarify rockycat's informative and well-written post, there are 2 Sheetz gas stations on Capital. Holden's is past the second one.
My wife brought home gourmet popcorn from a new place in WF that was absolutely awesome! Can't think of the name, but they sell ice cream too. We used to drive to The Mad Popper, but this new place in WF is far better.
The next spots are Raleigh addresses, but north of 540:
We really like the new place in the Bedford subdivision called Sammi's with some affiliation to the Cinelli clan. We've only tried their pizza and calamari, but both are sufficiently great to make up for the indifferent service we get there. To be clear, we really dislike their bad service, but the food makes up for it.
I also like the pizza at Pittsburgh Pizza & Wings on New Falls of Neuse. The sushi place in the same strip mall is good also.
I would love to see someone open a store for Chinese ingredients closer to me, like Sichuan peppercorns. There's a Korean market on Atlantic and Spring Forest that's pretty good. There's another one on Millbrook and Glenwood that's even better. There are several ethnic markets in the area of New Hope Church and Atlantic Ave. Sure these are in Raleigh, but you may be able to avoid crossing the beltline.
In Rolesville, Big Al's BBQ has killer brisket. Well worth the short drive from Wake Forest.
I'm sure there are an abundance of good tacos north of 540. I just haven't looked very hard yet.
