Review -- Little Saigon King and Sherbourne

  • 6

Work has taken me to eating many dinners in the King and Sherbourne area, and I've discovered this little place.

Limited seating, but fast cooking and take out.

A couple of the dishes are reminiscent of what I've seen at other "Vietnamese" places. I haven't tried any of these dishes yet. The rest of the offerings are the usual noodle or rice with veg and meat or tofu you find at other cheap and cheerful Asian takeouts around town, plus they also offer fresh rolls as appetizers.

Everything is very fresh (vegetables, meat), and portions are generous and not overly sauced or spiced, but still falvourful. Cheap and cheerful Asian food, with efficient service. Prices are very reasonable for what you get.

No coriander or other authentic herbs, but at their price point I wasn't really expecting any.

I like that nothing is sitting around on a steam table, there are cooks at the back assembling your order as it comes in to them. If I lived in the area, I'd be coming here often on nights when I didn't feel like cooking.

257 King Street East. For some reason the board software keeps adding in a link to the one in Kingston!

  1. Hi Pincus,

I'll have to respectfully disagree - I work in the area and this place is only used as an act of complete desperation by anyone in the office.

All of the sauces are store-bought and the lack of any fresh herbs is depressing. Herbs are cheap and what can make simple Asian takeaway dishes great. They don't even have fresh chilis - they top their dishes with dried chili flakes.

If you are often in the area may I suggest giving Mengrai Thai a try for take-away? It's about 1.5 - 2 blocks north of Little Saigon - on Richmond and Ontario street.

The majority of their noodle takeaway dishes are in the $9.00 range and there is absolutely no comparison in terms of quality. Here is a link to their take-out menu:

Oh, is THAT where Mengrai Thai is? I've been meaning to try it. Thanks for the link. I will hit it up tonight.

Let us know what you think!

Another hidden gem in the immediate area if you decide you are in the mood for italian is Mangia & Bevi (tucked into the basement of the building at King & Ontario). Excellent thin crust pizzas, pasta, etc.

    2. I enjoyed Mengrai Thai, although they have a casual attitude towards answering their phone when I was trying to arrange a pick-up order.

      Will try M&B tonight.

      1. M&B was also good food, great service.

Having agreed that both the pricier places have better food and for not a lot more money, I will still always have a fondness for Little Saigon and will even return to eat there if I'm in the neighbourhood and in a hurry.

I don't think I'll be commuting to Kingston, though. Why can't I remove that link permanently? Yi!
