Cinci: Hyatt-Oriental Wok, not cheap but I liked the food. ^L^

Cincinnati_Diner Mar 24, 2010 03:22 PM

Hello Cinci Chowhounds,

I went to the Oriental Wok that is part of the Hyatt Regency in Hyde Park this weekend, and liked their Chinese food, even though it was relatively expensive.

I had their crab cakes and potstickers as appetizers.

The crab cakes had a decent amount of crab in them, but the breading and cooking style made them oddly 'oriental' flavored and made me wish I was eating the crab cakes at the Chart House instead. Not bad, but...

The potstickers were pretty bad, thick rice flour wrappers with very little meat inside. Sad. They provided a decent dipping sauce and some nice dark hot chili paste on request, but they either need to put more meat in them or use a thinner wrap, or both! ^L^

I then ordered two entrees, the Twice Cooked Pork and the General Wongs Chicken, both requested as 'super extra spicy' (I say, "Chili paste, two times, in the wok!") ºLº

The Twice Cooked Pork was excellent, nice and hot, lots of cabbage, complex flavor, I was very happy. I will order this again!

The General Wongs Chicken was good, but not very spicy, and I found the pieces of chicken way too big. Once I cut the large pieces of chicken up in four to six pieces and stirred in some chili paste the waiter brought me, I was much happier. Plenty of chicken by the way, just in pieces that were too large.

Certainly not as inexpensive as I am used to for Chinese food, but the quality was so much higher than I have found in the other Chinese restaurants I've tried near Amelia, I was quite pleased overall. (I am a recent transplant from Santa Cruz CA, where I could get Chinese food this good at half the price.)

And you had better like the color red, and dim restaurants, or you won't like the Oriental Wok in the Hyatt Regency in Hyde Park! ^L^

Oops, johnbycz is correct, this Oriental Wok is located on the first floor of the Regency Tower condo building. I guess you can't edit posts here...

The address and phone number are:

Here is the general Oriental Wok website address: http://www.orientalwok.com/

Sorry about that! #L# Stupid Californians! ^L^ Hey, it *looked* like a hotel okay? -L-

And you know, I don't have a lot of food in the fridge tonight, and it's kinda cold and rainy, I bet some nice spicy food would taste great! ^L^ Darn, why did I start thinking like that, I've got hours to go here at work!! °L°

For the complete Oriental Wok experience, cross the river into Kentucky and try the main restaurant in Ft. Mitchell. In my opinion it's head and shoulders better than any other Chinese restaurant in the Cincinnati area.

        Hello Emm,

Thank you for that suggestion, I went to the Ft. Mitchell location for dinner Friday night and it was glorious! ^L^

I had the pot stickers again, and they again had much too think of a wrapper for the amount of filling. Oh well.

I also had their lettuce wrapped chicken appetizer, and it was fine. Nothing extraordinary but typical, and good.

And I had a nice large (but not multi-person sized) bowl of delicious hot & sour soup. Like almost all americanized, mid-west chinese food it was too sweet and thick, but the flavors were good ans was quite spicy! Mmmmm...

By the way my waiter was a fairly stout, mid-size non-chinese fellow (I didn't get his name, and *thankfully* he didn't tell it to me!), and his service was just _perfect_! He asked all the right questions, listened attentively and DID WHAT I ASKED, and was never overly intrusive. He asked if I wanted the appetizers in any particular order, noticed I was in no hurry and reading a book, so waited until I had almost finished my appetizers, than asked if I wanted the entrees started.

Also I had asked for my food to be "super spicy" and requested that three little bowls of their chile paste be put in both entrees I ordered, while it was cooking. And Lo, when the entrees came out they had done just that! Oh, I was so happy!! *L*

For my entrees I had the Schezwan Three Delight and the Ma Po Tofu. Both them were excellent! The Schezwan Three Delight had wonderful 'smoky' flavor, while the Ma Po Tofu was beautifully simple, lots of silky tofu some brown sauce and of course lots of chile paste!

Complaints include that again, everything was little too sweet and thickened, but hey this is the Mid-West! ^L^ And the shrimp, buried in the hot slippery sauce had the tails on them!?! °L° So you are supposed to grab that hot slippery tail and remove it? Do they think you are going to eat it!?! Dumb!

But all in all (I am picky!) it was a wonderful meal, and I was very happy! Oh, yeah, when the food was served the friendly female Chinese cook came out to declare I was her "new hero" for ordering my food so spicy! A quick pat on the back, and she was gone! But not forgotten when the tipping time came!!

Thanks again! The Hyde Park location has a high bar to meet, but I better go there a lot too, or it might disappear! @L@

It's not the Hyatt Regency; I think it's just the Regency. It's condos or apartments or something, not a hotel. The Oriental Wok is where J's Seafood used to be.

I'm glad you found a good Chinese place. But I guess I don't know where the Hyatt Regency is in Hyde Park? Are you thinking of the downtown Hyatt?

We moved from L.A. a few years ago and have yet to find a chinese restaurant that sells fresh good food in an attractive atmosphere. But we'll keep looking and maybe try Oriental Wok..
