Indonesian (?) soybean cake recipe??

Many years ago we ate delicious triangles of what must have been soybeans cooked in coconut milk and God only knows what other ingredients, poured into a 9"X9" pan to a depth of 1.5" or so, and baked until it solidified when cooled. They were produced by a mom-and-pop grocery in Pasadena, CA. Does ANYONE know what I'm writing about and have a recipe for it?

This sounds like a homemade version of tempeh perhaps? Lots of recipes out there for it.

THANKS buttertart. I knew nothing about tempeh. A search did turn up many mixed messages including this quote calling tempeh "the lutefisk of vegetarian foodstuffs". Guess I'll do more research.

If you liked what they made you'll probably like it. I love all things soybean except natto. BTW there are a lot of excellent recipes for tempeh and other less run-of-the-mill foodstuffs in Madhur Jaffrey's World of the East Vegetarian Cooking - came out in the early 80's but is still in print, I believe.
