Fried mullet sandwich in Naples

I was reading an article about our recently deceased sheriff, Aubrey Rogers. In the article, it said the Sheriff Rogers always had mullet and grits for lunch every Friday. Does anyone know where to find such a wonderful lunch?

    Okay, so glad this topic came up....how about SMOKED mullet? I love smoked fish and eat smoked kippers 2 or 3 times a week ...and I've been in Naples since 1988 and have never seen smoked mullet anywhere on menus or for sale! Does Captain Jerry's sell it? Any fish markets? Would love to try it...thanks everyone!

      Yea, I love smoked mullet, too. Used to eat it often growing up in Tampa. You can get it locally from Naples Smokehouse, Inc (http://naplessmokehouse.com). They come every Saturday morning to the farmer's market at the NW corner of Airport and Vanderbilt Beach, near the Pizzaiolis.

            Hey, Tom: purchased a small package of the smoked mullet today from Naples Smokehouse...very nice! Not very different from the smoked kippers I eat for lunch once or twice a week (alternating with sardines)...now I can say I've tried smoked mullet! Also bought: beets with greens, lemons, red bell peppers. What did you buy today at FM?

              Beets with greens is also one of your regular purchases, sometimes with extra greens (my wife sautés the greens with olive oil and garlic). But that time we bought some hand-made pottery, which was so heavy I begged her not to buy anything else (we walk there, and I'm the designated pack mule). The last smoked fish we bought there was some trout - also delicious.

      You may want to try Fine Fixin's, 2323 Davis Blvd. I believe that is where the sheriff dined. Pretty good eatin'!

        The 1995 net ban in Florida had a dramatic impact upon the harvesting of Mullet. What was once a fish you could buy smoked all along U.S. 41 and 19 from your car is no longer offered as it once was. If I recall Aubrey would hold fund raisers where they would serve mullet.
        Your best bet might be Randy's Fishmarket Restaurant. If they have mullet in the market you can substitute mullet for grouper in their sandwich. (perhaps a less than desirable choice).‎
