Chicago Chinatown Recommendations?

I'm a cook in Chicago who is venturing down into Chinatown for the first time. I have heard the obvious recommendation of the phoenix...but am looking for specific recommendations of dishes or little hole in the walls that you have found, can anyone help?

    1. You'll find lots of recommendations of restaurants in Chinatown in the discussion at http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/594324

Phoenix is one place for Cantonese food; however, other regions of China are represented as well. I like Double Li a lot; the owner, Ben Li, is usually in the dining room and can advise on what dishes to get. I've never gone wrong by following his recommendations! Lao Sze Chuan is also good; I recommend the three-chili chicken and the mayonnaise shrimp.

      1. I grew up in San Francisco and know good Chinese food. Phoenix isn't good.
The two times we ate there the shanghai dumplings were heavy as lead.

The dim sum is fair. I have been looking for a good chinese restaurant in chicago for 20 yrs. Can't find one. Mei Shung used to be good and had a taiwanese menu in addition to mandarin and szechuan specialities.
Don't know if its still good since the newer owner took over.

Can anyone who really knows Chinese food and has ventured outside of Chicago, please let me know how Moon Palace is?
        Thanks!!!

I've been going to Moon Palace for many years and really enjoy their Shanghai style dishes. Salt & Pepper Squid, Fish Fillet with peapod shoots, chive dumplings, xio long bao, steamed sole and many other dishes. Like many restaurants in Chinatown there are many Ameri-Chinese on the menu for the tourists.

Does Moon Palace offer dim sum on Saturday mornings?

Sorry, no dim sum at Moon Palace. I've yet to find a dim sum in Chicago that I think is very good. Been to Phoenix, Happy Chef and Furama and found them all to be dissapointing. Anybody have any suggestions?

I think Phoenix is okay, not that great, but certainly better than places like Three Happiness and Happy Chef (if my family would have to pick a place in Chinatown for dim sum, we'd pick Phoenix). We're in Chicago, whose Chinese food is quite weak comparing to other big cities in North America. So I guess my expectation has been modified accordingly in the past 10 years.

Some people like Shui Wah. I'm not a fan of made-to-order dim sum format unless they taste like it. Shui Wah's food is okay, but not so good that I'd surrender the fun and ease of ordering off the cart immediately.

My family lives in the burb, so usually, we just stay in suburbia and go to Jockey's Wok and Roll in Schaumburg (Roselle and Higgins). Okay enough to dispense the drive to Chinatown for its equally mediocre dim sum.

        2. Try Ed's Potsticker House (northern Chinese food)! It's not in Chinatown, but very close to it. It's got cheap and very very delicious food. Not easy to find. I lived in Chicago for several years before hearing about it, but it's a must try! Especially the beef noodle soup.

          1. I used to go with my best friend and her whole family to Three Happiness Restaurant and Golden Bull Restaurant. Also I think there's a Joy Yee's there--which is good, albeit not quite as authentic as Three Happiness or Golden Bull
