For old-fashioned, coffee shop style food, Eggies (on Fulton Ave.) has really good omelets. I also like Tower Cafe and would recommend the Crab Cakes Benedicts. I've never been, but I've heard excellent things about the Boulevard Bistro in Elk Grove.

re: free sample addict aka Tracy L
Yeah, I work near there also, so I only go there at lunch time. I never have a hard time getting a table. The service does depend on who you get. The young man is pretty good, but some of the older waitresses have been there a long time and don't seem to care much anymore. I have noticed that the food has been inconsistent over the last couple of years, but overall I still like the place. I especially like their omelets for breakfast and when I get lunch, I always get the side salad because of the homemade croutons.

For low key I like Evan's Kitchen in East Sacramento, very good biscuits and gravy.
For a dive, try Uptown Cafe on Del Paso Blvd.
If you are looking for a bit more upscale Tower Cafe does a decent brunch, way better than Fox and Goose in my view.
The best in the region IMHO is Katrina's in Auburn, about a 50 minute drive up I-80 but the food is worth it. There can be a bit of a wait though since its small and it is cash only.As Peter L mentioned, price range, setting, food type, and transportation would be helpful for further suggestions.

re: PeterL
Lucky Cafe 21st street. My favorite breakfast place on the grid (midtown).
BUT, the breakfasts at the Lake Forest Cafe are the best in the area (Folsom)

And Granite Rock Grill in Rocklin (not as far as Auburn and IMO better that Katrinas)is great too. Tops in the area. I love it and make the drive from Folsom to eat here about once a month..BUT if you really want something kind of more different, try the High Hand Nursery in Loomis. Food served in the atrium, there is an on site deli and the grounds and store are wonderful. It is a destination type place....
