i've been going to hurry curry for years and years (though there were a few years of a break from the stuff), and though i've been to places called curry house before (when there was one on la cienega, one in torrance, i think, and also in oc somewhere), i've never actually tried the one on the 2nd floor in the plaza across the street from hurry curry. is curry house worth it for me to cheat on hurry curry once to try? or should i stay loyal to hurry curry? will it be something i'll always wonder about?

I'm sure it will boil down to preference, but like you, I was a loyal Hurry Curry customer when I decided to give Curry House a shot. It was ok, but it wasn't good enough to convince me to cross over.

I still prefer Hurry Curry...

I was a customer of Curry House downtown and Hurry Curry on Sawtelle: once Curry House opened on Sawtelle, I've only rarely been back to Hurry Curry.

There are many staunch defenders of Hurry Curry, and it continues to be crowded at all times, and has opened a branch in Pasadena.

I prefer CH to HC: you might very well differ. But the question "Should I try this restaurant?" can only have one answer...

My recollection was that Curry House seemed more "authentic", more like the Curry you would get in Japan while the Hurry Curry was more suited for a more "western" palate.

My primary complaint with Hurry Curry was that the curry wasn't very good, although the rest of the components were great.

I like them both for different items. One thing you can get a Curry House on Sawtelle that you can't get at Hurry Curry (or other Curry Houses for that matter) is the curry in a hot stone bowl. This is my new favorite way to eat curry since the rice crisps up around the edges and the whole dish stays steaming hot while you eat.

If I was to rate the curries though, I would say Hurry Curry has a slightly better curry. It is also worth trying the curries at Sawtelle Kitchen (the one with the tempura fried meatloaf) and Blue Marlin. Both are nice with slightly different flavorings.

thanks guys...i think i pretty much don't need to try curry house, since i've already been to it at other locations...(they are part of the same chain, right?)

but i will try the curry at blue marlin when i go there tonight (making my way up and down sawtelle this month :) )

my own thoughts on hurry curry are...i like it, it's nice inside, the staff is nice, but for some reason, even when i ask for EXTRA SPICY, the curry just isn't spicy enough. i like the chicken cutlet curry, and the regular chicken curry has SUPER tender chicken, but one thing...my most recent visit, the rice ws sort of dry and hard. oh well.

i agree. when i ask for spicier sauce, it's like they didn't really turn up the heat. instead it tastes like they just added more curry powder to the sauce.

i prefer hurry curry. a coworker gave me a coupon for curry house a while back so we went for lunch. it's decent but the curry seems to lack an important spice or a base flavor. the sauce is just not as complex(?) as hurry curry's.

Hurry Curry is by far superior. I was really disappointed in Curry House. I forget the specific price, but Curry House felt much more expensive for less food. The decor in Curry House is very IHOP and chain-y, and the curry is so-so. Their menu tends toward the wacky. It also felt a little un-clean inside.

Hurry Curry is a nice little place, nothing special, but homey.

i must say i like the service at curry house-very gracious. i also like receiving their email coupons. curry house is fine but a little commercial tasting.

hurry curry's flavors seem more complex & layered, a bit more vibrant.

Personally, I think both restaurants are highly overrated. I don't get excited about katsu curry (for example) when the meat no longer tastes like chicken/pork/etc as it should. It's frustrating to order katsu curry and have the meat taste like it's been pounded too heavily or frozen too long, so that the juices have escaped and it remains as a panko-covered piece of cardboard.

My personaly fave is Curry Club Laramie in Costa Mesa (or Bistro Laramie in Gardena). They opened Curry Club Laramie in the Marukai supermarket food court a few months ago, and my first visit there, I was amazed that the curry didn't taste like it came straight from the box.

I spoke to Kazu, the very friendly manager there, and he explained that they make their curry from scratch every morning at the Gardena location, and they drive it over to Costa Mesa. I'm not sure if this continues to be the case, but one thing is for sure--the curry is awesome.

Their katsu curry is very good. For a twist on the chicken katsu, they use thigh (rather than breast meat) and it's very good. The pork katsu is flavorful, and they also serve oyster, short rib, and hamburger curry among a few other items.

Personally, I haven't been to the Gardena location, so if you give it a shot, let us know how it is.

I honestly think both places are OK. I've know a few places that are way better (E&E Cafe in Northridge is THE BEST curry hands down, ask anyone who knows anything about what good curry is, and if they've been to E&E, they will mention that place). I can cook curry way better than both those places. I personally prefer Curry House. I agree with the poster above that the stone bowl curries are the best to thing to get there.

Good curry has to have COOKED veggies (I like carrots for sweetness, and potatoes). They should be soft and not crunchy. I believe when you order veggies with these curries they just toss em in and don't even cook it.
