Lockhart Barbecue Showdown on Travel Channel

Travel Channel show Food Wars will feature a taste-off between Kreuz and Smitty's. See the link:

    That episode will be shown on March 23rd - next Tuesday.

    Should be interesting.

    Won't change my mind, tho.

      I'll watch it, but I don't like that show very much. I've seen a couple of episodes, and it features a lot of yelling between the backers of the two restaurants. It gets to be too much after a short time. Even my wife doesn't like it, and she pretty much likes any food related show.

      It airs tonight at 9:00 PM then again at 10:00 PM.

        Kreuz Market was declared the winner. 3 of 5 judges chose it, but the tie-breaking judge said he liked Smitty's brisket better, Kreuz' sausage better, and overall gave his vote to Kreuz. Smitty's is my favorite in Lockhart, but Mueller's in Taylor is still my overall favorite, although recent trip to Snow's in Lexington sold me on their brisket. (Didn't get to try the ribs or sausage at Snow's because they were already out of those by 11:15 on the Saturday morning I went.)

          Yeah, I noticed, too, that the final judge liked Smitty's brisket better. I do like sausage, but for me, it's really all about the brisket. I was kind of heartened to hear that the brisket at Kreuz was at least good. Seriously, the last three times I've been there, it was terrible. Dry, tough, salty.

          So I've skipped Kreuz the last few times I've gone to Lockhart, just picking up brisket at Black's and Smitty's.

          I will say that as a result of this show, I'm going to have to try Kreuz again.

            Agreed. I'll try them again as well, although I'm not sure how representative a made-for-TV, extra attention selection compares to their everyday.

              Oddly enough, the tv crews didn't really make for better BBQ. H and I were at Smitty's on the day of taping and the brisket we had wasn't up to the usual standards. For Smitty's, it was dry and not as flavorful as it usually is. You might want to it attribute to great than average crowds because of the taping, but that wasn't the case. The place was much less than half full.

              All that being said, the poorer-than-average brisket from Smitty's that day was still miles ahead of the last brisket we had from Kreuz which was as dry as shoe leather and tasted like nothing.

                Can Chisholm trail BBQ not compete with the other Lockhart BBQ joints? I don't see much talk about it on here.

                  The best I've ever heard about Chisholm Trail is that it's "cheap" and that "the sides are good."

                  I don't know personally. You'd think as often as I make the trek to Lockhart, I'd give them a try just so's I'd know.

                  But haven't felt any need to. Deciding among the other three is enough work for me. Have no desire to add a fourth to the mix.

                  But folks that have tried it have told me that the quality of the smoked meats is subpar.

                  Still, in fairness to them, they obviously must have some fans. There are always cars in the parking lot.

                    Believe it or not chisholm trail is always pretty crowded too. Had a beef rib there that was outstanding.

                      Joe Don, have you tried their brisket and/or sausage?

                      How about the pork ribs?
