What is a good Mexican Restaurant convenient to the Hyatt Reunion?

mjtx Mar 19, 2010 02:29 PM

We have a group of business associates coming into town in May for an event that will be held at the Hyatt Reunion. We want to take the group out for some really good "Tex-Mex" and were wondering if there were any good Tex-Mex restaurants near the hotel.

Closest I can think of is El Fenix at 1601 McKinney Avenue. Solid, old school gringo Tex-Mex. There are many others further away from you that I would consider "better" but, you asked for something close to the Hyatt Reunion.

What about the Iron Cactus at 1520 Main Street - www.ironcactus.com? It's walking distance from the Hyatt, and good, although I don't eat downtown very often. It also has an accommodating atmosphere, slightly more upscale than the "Downtown El Fenix," where I ate weekly with my family as a child and which lost a bit of its atmosphere since the elderly woman stopped making the hand-tossed tortillas at the open grill in the main dining room a couple (few?) decades ago. Still, the food at the Downtown El Fenix was good on a recent visit.

I would go with iron cactus over el fenix. I may be biased because i am in love with one particular dish there, their vegetarian enchiladas, but other people who've eaten there with me have also enjoyed a range of dishes. I also really like their salsas and brunch buffett.

I love Sol's Taco Lounge in Deep Ellum. Food is always very good and service is usually quick.

Deep Ellum used to be the happening place in town but now is very quiet. So this place is rarely busy at least when I've gone.

How about Fuel City Tacos located at 801 S Industrial Boulevard. Not really Tex Mex, but close and delicious. You will weep after eating the tacos.

While I do like Iron Cactus and El Fenix, I am not usually a fan of chains. I prefer Pepe's and Mito's in Deep Ellum for Mexican near downtown.

Would they be able to accomodate a party of 20 or so? How is the parking?

I would call ahead regarding the large party. I don't think it would be a problem. It is located in Deep Ellum so parking is usually limited to pay lots and availablility will depend on the time and day. Not the best parking but no place near downtown is going to have abundant, convenient parking. If you guests want to eat good food and drink some beer and ritas, then this might be the place for you. Google Pepe Mitos dallas and you will get links to review from Yelp and some other sites.

Taking the DART from Reunion to that area would also be very easy. Pepe Mitos and some other restaurants are a block away from the Baylor station.

Very true. I hadn't thought of that.
